Who better to talk about stupid decisions than former President Jimmy Carter. He has four years of stupid decisions to use as a guideline. At the 30th annual Carter Town Hall on Wednesday, former President Jimmy Carter told his audience he thought the Supreme Court decision to roll back restrictions on corporate spending in federal campaigns was "one of the stupidest rulings ever consummated or perpetrated on the American people."
The Citizens United ruling was decided 5-4 in 2010 and received criticism for allowing a flood of special interest money in politics. President Barack Obama was a major critic, saying the decision was "a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans."
Carter also discussed the 2012 election and the atmosphere in Washington during the talk, noting that he would not be interested in being president today, The Emory Wheel reports.
When asked about the 2012 presidential election, Carter said he has not had "any time to waste" on the Republican debates, but noted it is his belief that Rick Perry is leading the race so far. He added that the Texas governor's doubts on the theory of evolution and position on Social Security would keep him from winning the GOP nomination.
Despite saying he wouldn't side with any particular presidential candidate, Carter did say he would be happy to see Mitt Romney win the primary during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" on Thursday.
"I'm not taking a position, but I would be very pleased to see him win the Republican nomination," Carter said of Romney, adding that he doesn't "think anybody's going to beat Obama next year."
He may prove to be correct on the re-election of President Obama but right now it does not look that way. I wish he would pass around his Kool-Aid. Carter likes Obama because it keeps him before the public’s eye building housing for the poor. More housing for the poor is needed, with Obama driving the boat. The biggest wave of this recession has not hit yet.
From this week’s Harper’s Weekly roundup of news comes this bit of news. A poll of 30,000 people in 15 countries found that the world
still thinks America is the coolest, and in St. Petersburg,
Florida, a blood-covered, half-naked 22-year-old woman was
arrested for biting the face and arm of a 69-year-old man
who had been sleeping in a motorized wheelchair in front of
a Hooters. "I'm a vampire," the woman said, according to an
affidavit. "I am going to eat you." Police in Ogden, Utah,
responded to a report that a man was slaughtering a cow in
his driveway. "The cow was in the process of losing its
head," said officer Troy Burnett of the scene upon his
arrival. "It's not illegal, but it's absurd that people
would think slaughtering a cow in their driveway is okay.
Maybe on the west side of the county on one of the farms."
Harbor, an eight-year-old black and tan coonhound from
Boulder, Colorado, set the record for longest ears on a dog,
a Swedish elk was found drunk up a tree after eating too
many fermented apples, and Filipinos captured a
20-foot-long, 2,370-pound crocodile--the largest on record,
though a larger one was believed to be at large. A
maintenance worker in Yuma, Arizona, may have caused a power
failure that affected nearly 6 million people in California,
Arizona, and Mexico; Google was found to be using more
electricity than Salt Lake City; and the Federal Trade
Commission halted the sale of AcneApp and AcnePwner, two
smartphone apps that claimed to treat acne, one of them
using red and blue lights. "Smartphones make our lives
easier in countless ways," said FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz,
"but unfortunately, when it comes to curing acne, there's no
app for that."
