BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
May 2 is … Fire Day
If this is true and I tend to believe it is thank you Lord. We killed the bastard. Osama Bin Laden is dead, President Obama announced Sunday night, in a televised address to the nation. His death was the result of a U.S. operation launched today in Abbottabad, Pakistan, against a compound where bin Laden was believed to be hiding, according to U.S. intelligence. After a firefight, a small team of American forces killed bin Laden and took possession of his body, the president said.
“Tonight I can report to the American people and the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden,” Obama said during brief remarks at the White House. In order to avoid making Bin Laden a martyr and provide zealots a burial site to visit, he was buried at sea.
The Kentucky Oaks is Friday. It is the Kentucky Derby for the girls. The 1 1/8 mile race is restricted to 3 year-old fillies. Since today is Fire Day, a hunch bet could be R Heat Lightning, but she will probably be the post time favorite. I am picking Plum Pretty, the name reminds me of my wife and she is ready to win. The race is limited to 14 horses with preference given to graded stakes winnings. She should qualify but the final field will not be set until Wednesday afternoon.
Just to pass the time, I occasionally go to the census web page http://www.howmanyofme.com/. I went to check how many people in the United States are named Barack Obama. There is one. I checked the name Moammar Gadhafi. There are none. There are 1560 people with the first name Bing and one Bing Crosby. There are 73 people in this country named Bruce Brennan. Check your name out or any name.
Walmart, admitting it made a mistake five years ago, is bringing back gun sales to most of its stores. Walmart quit selling guns at two-thirds of its stores five years ago as part of a push to slim its line of merchandise. At around the same time it ceased selling fabric and fishing rods. Those items are coming back too.
Since the election of President Obama, gun sales have increased dramatically although they have begun to slow down. Part of the reason was the belief that the Democratic Congress and President would work together to stiffen gun control and sales. That has proven to be a false belief and in fact the growing popularity in concealed weapons permits across the nation has helped push gun sales up.
Walmart will be reintroducing hunting weapons soon. It only sells pistols in its Alaska stores. This is a smart move by Walmart but it should add pistols nationwide.
No, it’s not Halloween. It was on this day in Tacoma, Washington, in 1904, that Harry Lillis Crosby was born; better known to us as Bing.
Bing Crosby went on to sing well over 4,000 songs during his impressive show biz career which spanned not only hit recordings, but movies, radio and TV, too. What was Crosby’s most successful tune? White Christmas, which was written by Irving Berlin.
Bandleader Paul Whiteman hired Crosby in 1926, along with singing partner, Al Rinker. With the addition of Harry Barris, the trio became The Rhythm Boys and gained quite a following. After leaving the Whiteman organization in 1930, Crosby sang for a brief while with Gus Arnheim’s band. In 1931, ‘Der Bingle’ recorded I Surrender, Dear. The popularity of that song landed Crosby on CBS radio and an unsurpassed solo career was underway. Over the next 30 years, Crosby’s baritone and easy manner sold more than 300,000,000 records.
The consummate golfer, Crosby was host of the annual Crosby Open held at Pebble Beach, Spyglass and, Cypress Point. With Crosby’s passing in 1977 -- on a golf course near Madrid, Spain -- the tournament changed names to the AT&T/Pebble Beach Open.
Bing was featured in over 60 movies, winning an Academy Award for Going My Way in 1944. His good friend and golfing buddy Bob Hope never won an Academy Award, a private joke they kidded each other about for years in real life and in the movies. Crosby won the Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 1962 and has been called the number one recording artist of all time. For those who like Bing’s movies, TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is showing several all day long beginning this morning. Included are three of the Road movies with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. The road movies have some funny bits in them.
Together, we can all croon in his honor: Ba Ba Ba Booo.
More evidence is pointing toward the falseness of Libya’s report one of Gaddafi’s sons and three grandchildren were killed by a NATO air strike Friday. Who lies about something of that nature to get sympathy? Now you have to really kill them so the world doesn’t find out you were lying. Not a good day to be a Gaddafi.
At the Correspondence Dinner in Washington DC Saturday night Donald Trump didn't appear to have many fans at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday. The Wrap reports that the media mogul was greeted by a round of "boos" upon his arrival to Washington's Hilton Hotel with his wife, Melania.
After giving a brief interview with a group of several of media outlets, Trump, who was invited to the event as a guest of the Washington Post, walked away to a chorus of audible boos from the media members on the press line. And it wasn't because they wanted to hear Trump talk more.
Together, we can all croon in honor of Donald ‘The Joke’ Trump: Ba Ba Ba Booo
Just a couple of thoughts I had.
