Slaughter in America;

Julie Schenecker, the woman police say killed her two children for being "mouthy," pleaded not guilty in court today. Schenecker, 50, appeared in court in Tampa, Fla., dressed in a red jail outfit, The Associated Press reported. The judge appointed the public defender's office to represent her. If convicted, Schenecker could face the death penalty. We can only hope the state of Florida does just that. Florida is one of the bright states when it comes to the death penalty. They actually use it. Police found the bodies of Schenecker's two children, Calyx, 16, and Beau, 13, in the family home on Jan. 28. Both children had been shot in the head. Police say Schenecker told investigators that she killed the children because she was tired of them talking back.

Way to go Ohio. We need more of this and executions should be done within 36 months of the crime, by law, federal and state. Ohio on Thursday executed a one-time neo-Nazi who shot to death two men and a teen more than a quarter-century ago on the campus of Cleveland State University in a shooting spree that targeted blacks. Frank Spisak, who chose to read Bible verses in German for a final statement, was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m. following an injection of sodium thiopental at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Spisak, 59, set the Ohio record for the longest time on death row before execution, at more than 27 years. He was also the last Ohio inmate to die by sodium thiopental, the scarce drug the state is giving up in favor of a more readily available substitute.
Spisak blamed the 1982 shootings on his hatred of gays, blacks and Jews and on his mental illness related to confusion about his sexual identity. Spisak identified himself as a woman and referred to himself in correspondence as Frances Spisak, a name his attorneys also used. "Heil Herr," he appeared to say when he was finished. It was unclear what he meant, as the phrase is not used in German. His struggles with the German drew snickers from witnesses, who included the daughter of one victim, two brothers of another and John Hardaway, a surviving shooting victim. "Speak English, you fool," said Jeffrey Duke, the brother of slaying victim Brian Warford.

Today I am going to provide you with copies of two press releases I have prepared and sent out. Many of you may have received one or both of these earlier if you are on my mailing list or read my Twitter or Facebook pages. This column is sort of marketing or self-promotion 101. This could cost you a lot of money to learn this stuff but not here, it is free and quite basic.

Press releases are designed to be short and to the point. The release should be dated and name the city of origin. The press release should identify the person the release is about, give a brief biography and provide pertinent contact information.

Once the basics are covered, the press release should then briefly state who, what, where, why and when about the subject matter of the press release.

At one time, press releases were used by big corporations and public relations firms. Not anymore. With the proliferation of digital content, digital delivery, E-mail and FAX, press releases should and are used by anyone with a product to get before the public or a business seeking increased traffic to its web site, phone number or office. If you are in a position to promote yourself, your business or your products, consider press releases. You can always issue multiple press releases with the first one or two just teasers for what’s coming. Do not, however, overuse the press release. If you do, people will begin to ignore your later press releases. Remember, everybody’s time is as important to them as yours is to you.

In the next several weeks and months, I am going to be producing short video programs for my law practice and books. I will direct the reader to them once they are produced and posted. This is a booming area for promotion and advertising. YouTube, Facebook and Twitter plus other social sites and your own web site make producing the program and posting same rather easy to learn and do.  The program should be between 1 ½ and 2 minutes in length. Short and to the point with some entertainment value. More is sure to come.
