BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

October 21 is … Babbling Day

I should have a fine day. I can babble with the best of ‘em. Speaking of babbling how is Brook?

St. Louis Cardinals 1     Texas Rangers 2 ; the World Series is tied 1 game to 1 game.

I am sorry but yesterday I neglected to mention several historical events. Yesterday was the anniversary of the birth of Mickey Mantle, Tom Petty and the 44th birthday of the world famous hunter Mark Catalanello. Sorry.

In case you have not heard, longtime dictator of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed following the capture of his hometown of Sirte. I hope it was a long, painful but civilized death.

Bryant Gumbel is babbling, playing the race card and using racism to his benefit. HBO’s Bryant Gumbel directed some pointed remarks at David Stern during Tuesday night's edition of “Real Sports,” likening the NBA commissioner to a slave owner, whose bigger priority is to “demean” players, rather than find a solution to the league’s lockout.

“If the NBA lockout is going to be resolved any time soon, it seems likely to be done in spite of David Stern, not because of him,” Gumbel said. “I say that because the NBA's infamously egocentric commissioner seems more hell-bent lately on demeaning the players than resolving his game’s labor impasse.

In remarks he acknowledges will make people 'cringe,' HBO's Bryant Gumbel likens NBA commissioner David Stern to a slave owner, who treats players like 'his boys.

“How else to explain Stern’s rants in recent days? To any and everyone who’d listen, he has alternatively knocked union leader Billy Hunter, said the players were getting inaccurate information and started sounding Chicken Little claims about what games might be lost if players didn't soon see things his way.”

“Stern’s version of what’s been going on behind closed doors has, of course, been disputed. But his efforts were typical of a commissioner who has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys.

“It’s part of Stern’s M.O., like his past self-serving edicts on dress code or the questioning of officials, his moves are intended to do little more than show how he's the one keeping the hired hands in their place.

“Some will, of course, cringe at that characterization, but Stern’s disdain for the players is as palpable and pathetic as his motives are transparent. Yes, the NBA's business model is broken, but to fix it maybe the league’s commissioner should concern himself most with the solution and stop being part of the problem.”

Remarks like those of Mr. Gumbel, along with the criminal activity of a significant portion of the NBA players, is the reason the NBA is called The National Black Association. Gumbel is not the first black to compare NBA owners to slave owners. For 15 million a year, I would gladly be a slave; it is only for six months a year and a career lasts less than 15 years. Gumbel has been a moron for years and continues to be one. He has been driven from every job he had until HBO started paying him, probably just to meet their minority quota.

Bryant Gumbel is an annoying gnat when compared to a major political leader but both can speak out their asses. Vice President Biden is stepping up his argument that rapes and murders could increase if Congress does not pass President Obama’s $447 billion jobs bill – evoking sexual and violent imagery in his sales pitch for the second time in a week. Speaking to Philadelphia police officers Tuesday at the University of Pennsylvania, Biden slammed Republican critics who say the jobs bill is just “temporary,” underscoring measures aimed at maintaining police force levels.

“Let me tell you, it’s not temporary when that 9-1-1 call comes in and a woman’s being raped. If a cop shows up in time to prevent the rape, it’s not temporary to that woman,” Biden said with his voice rising. “It’s not temporary to the guy whose store is being held up and has a gun being pointed to his head if a cop shows up and he’s not killed. That’s not temporary to that store owner. Give me a break -- temporary. “I wish these guys who thought it was temporary, I wish they had some notion what it’s like be on the other side of a gun or a 200-pound man standing over you telling you to submit,” he added. “Folks, it matters. It matters.” Last Wednesday, Biden suggested during a speech in Flint, Mich., that rapes and murders could rise if the jobs bill failed to pass Congress.

The Republican National Committee released a memo calling Biden’s comments “irresponsible and mean-spirited” and calling on the media and women’s groups to condemn the remarks.

“No victim of violent crime would ever wish that others were forced to experience the same trauma they went through – especially to make a brazen political point. So why would the sitting vice president of the United States?” “Our economy is hurting and the Obama administration’s policies have only prolonged the pain, but that is no excuse for Vice President Biden to wish his political opponents to be subjected to rape or have a gun held to their head,” the RNC said. “Victims of violent crime should never be used for political gain.”

Biden’s comments came after the Democratic-controlled Senate defeated the bill last Tuesday. The White House is pushing Congress to pass the bill piece-by-piece.

Perhaps the Administration should develop a workable crime program that does more than just throw money at the problem. Build prisons and incarcerate criminals. Execute violent criminals. Do not insult my intelligence by telling me rapes and murders will increase if Obama’s job bill is not made law.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.
