Good-bye National Tea Company

These thoughts are mine. They may be shared by many but I am speaking for myself. If you are offended, it was not intentional. If you continually get offended by my positions and opinions, you should change, I doubt I will.
DECEMBER 14, 2010

December 14 is … National Bouillabaisse Day.

The company that owns A & P Grocery stores has filed for bankruptcy. The 151 year old company from White Plains, New York operates 395 stores under various names. At one point, it was the largest grocery store company in the company.

Bernie Madoff will not even try to get a day pass to attend his son’s funeral. Good move Bernie.

I have one word for the Monday Night Football game between Baltimore and Texas. WOW! That was a football game befitting Monday Night. It will be a hard act to follow for the Bears and Minnesota this coming Monday Night.

The Brett Favre streak ended last night. It is an accomplishment on par with Cal Ripken, Jr. and his streak of consecutive games played. Like all things, it has to end sometime. Last night was the time for Favre’s streak to end. I do not want to downplay what he did but the streak lasted a few games too many. It will never be broken at 280 games started or 297 games started, which is where it ended.

Cliff Lee went back to the Philadelphia Phillies last night, agreeing to a five year deal worth $120 million dollars. The average of $25 million per year is good work if you can find it. Baseball owners just cannot stop themselves from spending the game into oblivion. The fans in Philadelphia are happy but every fan will pay more to go to a game to cover this outrageous salary. Of course, the worst thing about it is it is Cliff Lee getting it not me. At least the Yankees did not end up with him, although all their spending last year did not help win a World Series. The Yankees have to make a splash to offset the Red Sox spending this off season but the pickings are getting slim. Stay tuned, the Yankees are bound to make someone an offer they can’t refuse to pull off a big trade shortly.

A federal judge in Virginia has ruled a key portion of Obamacare unconstitutional. Obamacare, the nickname for the health care reform act, has a provision that requires all Americans to have healthcare insurance by 2014. If they do not have it from work, they must purchase it. U. S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson, a judge appointed by George Bush in 2002, ruled that provision is unconstitutional based on the limited powers of Congress to regulate interstate commerce. Congress can prevent something from happening but they cannot force everyone to enter the free market and take affirmative action.

This is not like State automobile insurance law mandates. One, it is federal law not state law. Two, an individual does not have to purchase automobile insurance. They can choose not to drive. In Obamacare, to avoid the requirement of having to purchase health care, one would have to choose not to live. Other challenges are already in the Courts with a Florida federal judge expected to make a ruling Thursday.

The challenges are far from over. A big one being held back is the welfare proponent. If you must purchase health care coverage and cannot afford it, what happens? The obvious answer is those with money will insure those without money, including illegal aliens. Explain to me how this provision fits with the proper name of the legislation, The Affordable Care Act. Affordable to who? This is false and misleading advertisement that would require a government agency take action against any private enterprise trying to sell this to the general public.
