The news as I see it and the views as I want them

Your thumb is the same length as your nose.
The following headline was in the High Plains Daily Leader & Times. The Leader / TImes is the official newspaper of Seward County, and the City of Liberal, Kansas.
Hooker overcomes illness, slaps Beaver 64-57
According to the newspaper story; Even battling illness, the Hooker High School Bulldogs made a statement. Facing a team they could potentially face again in the next few weeks with the district championship on the line, the Bulldogs held off a charging Beaver Dusters 64-57 Tuesday night. “We had kids sick in there,” Hooker head coach Bud Valerius said. “I really think they did a good job gutting it out.” The win extends Hooker’s winning streak to eight and gives the Bulldogs a 13-5 overall record. Beaver falls to 13-7.

It was on this night in 1940 that Beat the Band made its debut on NBC radio. The band was that of Ted Weems and his 14-piece orchestra, who were joined by Elmo ‘The Whistling Troubadour’ Tanner, Harry Soskind and Country Washington; announcers Marvin Miller and Fort Pearson; emcee, Thomas Garrison Morfit (aka Garry Moore) and Hildegarde; and several noted singers, Marvel Maxwell and Marilyn Thorne. One other star of the show was a barber from Pittsburgh, PA (nearby Canonsburg, actually), who would record many hits for RCA Victor from 1943 right through the dawn of the 1970s. His name was Perry Como.
Beat the Band was a funky show where listeners’ questions were selected in the hopes of stumping the band. If a listener’s question was chosen, he or she received $10. The questions were posed as riddles: What song title tells you what Cinderella might have said if she awoke one morning and found that her foot had grown too large for her glass slipper? If the band played the correct musical answer, Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?, the listener lost. When Raleigh cigarettes sponsored Beat the Band, the listener who beat the band won $50 and two cartons of cigarettes ... Raleighs, of course. When the sponsor changed to General Mill’s Kix cereal, if the listener beat the band, he/she won twenty bucks and a case of Kix cereal. Crunch. Crunch. Have you ever really played the Kazoo? I have not. I am sure I have blown into one but I do not recall ever trying to make music with it, just sound. I know I have never been on a rattle snake roundup. I have never had any desire to go on one. I am not afeared of snakes but I do not go out of my way to meet any.
Experienced snake charmers and snake wranglers do not die from snake bites because they have built up immunity to the venom. They build up the immunity by being bit multiple times. I have never applied for a job where the job description requires the applicant to intentionally get bit by a snake often enough that the bitten develops an immunity to the deadly snake venom. You better hope the immunity develops before you die.

One of our leaders at work; U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich is suing a restaurant company for $150,000 for selling him a sandwich containing an unpitted olive, the suit alleges. The olive caused Kucinich "serious and permanent injuries" as well as "pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment," according to a complaint filed in Superior Court in Washington, D.C. The 64-year-old Democrat bit into the sandwich wrap at the Longworth Cafeteria in the House office building in April 2008, according to the complaint. WAY TO GO KUCINICH, LEAD ON? This is one of the reasons you were laughed at when you comedically ran for President. Nobody took you serious then. This is sure to help. He is suing our government for a meal served to him like a king in the House office building. I bet he did not pay for the meal in the first place. What a jackass. Remember, he was a aisle hog! He has managed to make aisle hogs look good compared to him.

Should we worry about this? If the growth is among the fanatics, I will worry. This has happened throughout history; typically to the detriment of the current majority. The global number of Muslims is expected to jump 35 percent in the next 20 years, growing twice as fast as the non-Muslim population, according to a study published today. But Muslims are multiplying at a slower pace than before, and their numbers are expected to level out in the coming decades. That's according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, which published on its website today, projections for growth in the Muslim population between 2010 and 2030. The analysis could stoke fears among critics of Islam in Europe and America, who claim the religion clashes with Western values and spreads extremism. But it could also abate those fears, with evidence that Islam is not exploding across the globe as fast as some pundits may have suggested.

Did President Obama steal his latest catch phrase from Newt Gingrich? You decide.

The phrase that President Barack Obama used 10 times in his State of the Union address and at least five more times during a visit to Wisconsin on Wednesday, is also the title of a 2005 book by Newt Gingrich. Wherever they are on the political spectrum, it seems great minds agree that America must "win the future." Gingrich, the former House speaker and habitual Republican presidential prospect, published "Winning the Future" in January 2005. He subtitled it "A 21st Century Contract With America" and laid out his remedies for terrorism, godlessness, flagging patriotism, too much spending and not enough math and science education. In two days Obama has made the phrase his own and used it to promote his own solutions to the problems he sees. "We weren't aware at first of the Gingrich tie, but it wasn't a concern," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer told me in an e-mail. He said it wasn't a concern because the phrase is a common one. The White House became aware of the Gingrich connection "recently," Pfeiffer said. Before the speech? Yes.
