D-day 1944

June 6 is … Teacher's Day and National Applesauce Cake Day

I don’t think I have ever had applesauce cake. Does not sound too good but one never does know. I do like to eat, just about anything that won’t eat me first and some that will. Let me hear from you if you have had applesauce cake. Send me a recipe.

1932 - The first U.S. federal tax on gasoline was enacted. The rate was a penny per gallon. Ride a bike. Save some money.

1944 - This was D-Day, the day thousands of Allied troops invaded Normandy, France. Their objective: to open a second major European front in the battle against the Nazis. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, commander of these united forces (and, who later became President of the United States) said, “This landing is but the opening phase of the campaign in Western Europe. Great battles lie ahead. I call upon all who love freedom to stand with us.”

Thank you all WW II veterans. We owe you a lot, as we do all veterans.

The United States is on a roll in killing the bad, evil Muslim radicals. That’s a good thing. It is also about time. An al-Qaida leader sought in the 2008 Mumbai siege and rumored to be a long shot choice to succeed Osama bin Laden was believed killed in a U.S. drone attack as he met with other militants in an apple orchard in Pakistan, an intelligence official said Saturday. If confirmed, it would be another blow against the terror organization a month after the slaying of its leader. The purported death of Ilyas Kashmiri – who also was accused of killing many Pakistanis – could help soothe US-Pakistan ties that nearly unraveled after the May 2 bin Laden raid. While it was unclear how Kashmiri was tracked, his name was on a list of militants that both countries recently agreed to jointly target as part of measures to restore trust, officials have said.

Described by American officials as al-Qaida's military operations chief in Pakistan, the 47-year-old Pakistani was one of five most-wanted militant leaders in the country accused of a string of bloody attacks in Pakistan and India as well as aiding plots in the West. He also has been named a defendant in an American court over a planned attack on a Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in 2005. Washington had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his location.

One Pakistani intelligence officer said Kashmiri was believed killed along with eight other militants in a drone strike Friday close to Wana town in South Waziristan, not far from the Afghan border. A senior Pakistani security official said there "were strong indications" of his death.

A fax purportedly sent by the militant group he was heading – Harakat-ul-Jihad al-Islami's feared "313 Brigade" – confirmed Kashmiri was "martyred" in Friday's 11:15 p.m. strike. It was sent to journalists in Peshawar, and its authenticity could not be independently confirmed. The group, which has not previously communicated with the media, promised revenge against America in the handwritten statement on a white page bearing its name of the group. Soon after the attack, local intelligence officials said the slain men were in a large compound. The intelligence officer said Saturday that the militants were meeting in an apple orchard near the house when the missiles hit.

I wonder who picked an apple orchard for the meeting. Do these people think we will not waste apples? In the United States we are long on apples. We will blow-up as many as we need to if we can kill the evil-doers. I assume we had a lead as to these people being in the apple orchard. If not, why are we bombing an apple orchard? The house next to the apple orchard was the target but I thought the drones were pinpoint in their accuracy. Was this killing just a lucky miss?
The good ol’ days, at least the old days. I spent many an evening at the drive-in movie. The first movie I ever saw in any type of theatre was Ben-Hur at the Streator Drive-In. The first U.S. drive-in to show movies was opened in Camden, New Jersey, on Crescent Boulevard, this night in 1933. Those first drive-in moviegoers got to see Wife Beware, a flick not destined to be a classic. The screen measured a huge 40 feet by 50 feet and was easily seen by everyone in the first cars in the front to the 500th car in the back row. Everyone (including the whole town) could hear the sound, too ... with a slight delay for the folks in the back row because the sound emanated from speakers mounted next to the screen. Admission was 25 cents per person plus 25 cents for the car, maximum $1.00.
As drive-in movies became popular throughout the country, families would regularly park their cars in the front rows so the kids in their PJs could play on the swings and monkey bars before the movie started. The rest parked wherever, since a good number of those moviegoers weren’t there to see the movie anyway!
The passion pits that dotted the country, some with in-car heaters and through-your-radio sound have all but disappeared, as TV, video cassettes and DVDs have made movie viewing more convenient. Those drive-ins that do remain, however, offer more than just all-day swap shops in their huge lots. Some have four or five, even six screens, showing first run films at about $7.00 per carload. (Those stowing away in the trunk will be tossed out of the theatre immediately.)
Be sure to visit the snack bar at intermission for the pizza with the mushroomy-rooms ... and try not to spill your drinks and popcorn while searching for your car ... and remember to remove the speaker from your side window before you drive off. The breaking glass kinda puts a damper on the passion. It also made the drive home cold and wet if it was rainy or cool. Sometimes you love a rainy night.
Just a couple of thoughts I had.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MARY K. 35 years is just the beginning.

JUNE 5, 2011

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
June 5 is … Festival of Popular Delusions Day
Today is my 35th anniversary. Happy Anniversary Mary K., I love you. Thank you for a wonderful ride. I was not delusional on June 5, 1976 when I married my young bride. This song is for you, babe.

John Edwards had a tough week. His lawyers and he claimed his innocence. One of the six counts against him is for lying. Nobody believes him and no one has for a year. He should just shut-up and hire smarter lawyers. During his press conference after Court he said he did not break the law and a minute or so later said he did not do anything he knew was illegal. He is a lawyer. He made millions as a Plaintiff’s ambulance chaser. He knows the law.

It has long been said his late wife, Elizabeth, was the real mover and shaker in his world. She was once quoted as saying “…you don’t even read. You’re a hick.” I do not know if he is a hick but he has no ethical backbone. How do you pay a woman you are having sex with and impregnate over $700.000.00 to act as your campaign videographer and ask an aide to claim the bastard was the aides and not expect to get caught. This was all going on while his wife was dying from cancer.

By paying the woman for sex Edwards made her a prostitute which makes John Edwards a real john, bordering on a pimp. The woman, although good-looking, is not much better than Edwards. She is a home wrecker, getting pregnant, likely on purpose knowing he had money to pay her off, agreeing to the story about the campaign aide, who was also married, and living a life of luxury on campaign contributor’s dime. She is a gold-digger. The campaign aide is an idiot. No one in this story has clean hands but they two things in common, sex and greed.

President Obama did not have a much better week. The economy is moving backwards, still slumping in a recession that will not end. Unemployment is out of control. No matter how many times Obama or his people put a favorable spin on economic news it does not change the fact the economy is mired in a sustained downturn. Gas prices are rocketing up, unemployment is going up, job growth is declining, taxes are going up, states, cities and counties are broke and Obama wants to raise taxes.

The Health Care Reform Act has been the law for well over a year. Where is the savings we were promised? Where is the affordable insurance? Where is the improved health care delivery?

Obama has very little to be proud of in his being President. He got bin Laden and probably wishes he had kept that card to play closer to the election.

All of the bad news has knocked Weinergate from the headlines. I bet Weiner is happy.

The DeKalb County Liners had their home opener Saturday night. They won. They play again tonight and Monday night. All games are at Sycamore Park off Airport Road in Sycamore. Night games start at 7:05 p.m. or 6:05 p.m. depending on the day of the week. It is quality, affordable baseball with competitive action between players that play at the College level. The food available is tasty and inexpensive as are the beverages. Alcohol is served. The Liners offer a wide assortment of activities before the first pitch and between innings. The crowd participates in much of the entertainment.

Like the Liners on Facebook or visit the Liners web site.

Dr. Death dies; Sen. Paul Rand doesn't want to hear it.

JUNE 4, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
June 4 is … Old Maid's Day. Unless you want to go fish.

Senator Paul Rand, the Libertarian Senator from Kentucky has called for those who attend a radical speech event to be sentenced to prison or be deported. He wants those who listen to the speeches to be sent to prison not those making the radical speech. He must feel we have freedom of speech but not freedom of listen.

I did not know him and really do not have an opinion on him other than he was a criminal that thought the laws did not apply to him. Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the controversial assisted suicide advocate, has died at a Detroit-area hospital at the age of 83.

This story from AP has a little personal aspect to it. I did not know or ever hear of the lawyer killed in Yuma, Arizona but as a lawyer, I always know someone in nearly every case does not like you. A 73-year-old man shot and killed the attorney who represented his ex-wife in their divorce and four others in multiple locations in a rampage that rattled an Arizona border town. He also wounded one person before being found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound roughly two after the first shots were fired in Yuma, a city of about 200,000. The lawyer was killed while packing up his office on his last day of work.

Yuma police identified the suspected shooter as Carey Hal Dyess of Yuma.

The timeline of events wasn't immediately clear, but police said they responded to the first call at about 9:30 a.m. Victim Jerrold Shelley was a prominent attorney who represented Dyess' ex-wife in their divorce. He was found dead in his downtown law office, Yuma Police Chief Jerry Geier said. Shelley was one of the lawyers representing seven young men – three sets of brothers – who sued the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson after accusing a priest of repeatedly raping them when they were children.

Authorities say Dyess killed four other people elsewhere in Yuma County. An adult man and woman were found dead inside a small farm house outside the town of Wellton, said Yuma police Sgt. John Otero, who was helping the sheriff's office process the scene. The tree-shaded home was set back about 100 feet from a highway, with a cow pasture out front. The suspect was found dead in another location near Wellton, about 25 miles east of Yuma. It's unclear who the other victims were or where they were killed. The wounded person was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital.

The downtown-area shooting forced officials to block off a city street and lock down the nearby Yuma County Courthouse and some schools. No one was injured at the courthouse or schools, and the buildings were later reopened. Court records show Dyess was involved in two civil court cases, one in Yuma and one in nearby Wellton. A judge issued an order of protection against Dyess in one of the cases in 2006, and a court clerk said it stemmed from Dyess' wife divorcing him. No further information was immediately available on the cases.

Mayor Al Krieger called the shootings a tragedy for the victims and their families, and for residents of Yuma. "It's one of those things where someone went and did something very, very foolish," Krieger said. "I'm sorry for the loss of life." Yuma County Presiding Judge Andrew Gold issued a statement through the Arizona Supreme Court saying officials were "thankful that those within the courthouse are safe," but shocked and saddened at the violent acts that occurred in the close-knit community.

Yuma attorney Amanda Taylor was friends with Shelley and described him as a good man who was dedicated to his Mormon beliefs. She said Shelley was wrapping up a long career practicing law. "He was retiring. He literally was packing up his office today," Taylor said. "He was an excellent family man. Well-respected in this community. Very kind. I'm just sick. I've lost such a good friend."

Obama is now insisting taxes must be raised as part of a budget deal. He told Congressional leaders on Thursday the pre-Bush tax rates must be reinstated. He said he was firm in this conviction and would not cave-in this time. The rationale Obama and other Democrats use is that it is really not a tax hike, merely returning to previous tax rates. If you pay the new rate, it is a tax hike no matter what you call it. Obama should call it a Welfare Tax, the wealthy paying for the welfare recipients. It is a tax for being successful and hard-working. Try honesty in government. We, the citizens, are really not as stupid as Washington thinks we are.

Just a couple of thoughts I had.

Weinergate and the Tallahatchie Bridge.

JUNE 3, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
June 3 is … Repeat Day
June 3 is Repeat Day

“Weinergate” rises again for the married Congressman from New York who posted his own picture or someone like him with an erection. He is denying he posted the picture but few people believe him. He has made several conflicting statements about this scandal meaning he cannot even keep his lies straight. “Weinergate” is still being cooked up by Congressman Weiner (D-NY). Do they put catsup on hot dogs in New York? Is the Congressman still looking for a bun to put his Weiner in? Do you think Congressman Weiner would like to throw that photo off the Tallahatchie Bridge, like Billie Joe did?
It was a dirty, dusty, delta dawn day.
“Ode Billie Joe" is a 1967 song written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry, a singer-songwriter from Chickasaw County Mississippi. The single, released in late July, was a number-one hit in the United States, and became a big international seller. The song is ranked #412 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. The recording of "Ode to Billie Joe" generated eight Grammy nominations, resulting in three wins for Gentry and one win for arranger Jimmie Haskell. The song has sold over three million copies.
The song is a first-person narrative that reveals a quasi-Southern Gothic tale in its verses by including the dialog of the narrator's family at dinnertime on the day that "Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.” Throughout the song, the suicide and other tragedies are contrasted against the banality of everyday routine and polite conversation. The song begins with the narrator and her brother returning, after morning chores, to the family house for dinner. After cautioning them about tracking in dirt, "Mama" says that she "got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge" that "Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge," apparently to his death.
At the dinner table, the narrator's father is unsurprised at the news and says, "Well, Billie Joe never had a lick o' sense; pass the biscuits, please" and mentions that there are "five more acres in the lower forty I got to plow." Although her brother seems to be taken aback ("I saw him at the sawmill yesterday.... And now you tell me Billie Joe has jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"), he's not shocked enough to keep him from having a second piece of pie. Late in the song, Mama questions the narrator's complete loss of appetite ("Child, what's happened to your appetite? I been cookin' all mornin' and you haven't touched a single bite,") and then recalls a visit earlier that morning by Brother Taylor, the local preacher, who mentioned that he had seen Billie Joe and a girl who looked very much like the narrator herself and they were "throwin' somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge." In the song's final verse, a year has passed, during which the narrator's brother has married and moved away. Also, her father died from a viral infection, which has left her mother despondent. The narrator herself now visits Choctaw Ridge often, picking flowers there to drop from the Tallahatchie Bridge onto the murky waters flowing beneath.
Questions arose among the listeners: what did Billie Joe and his girlfriend throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge, and why did Billie Joe commit suicide? One possible interpretation is that the narrator had an abortion, and what she and Billie Joe throw off the bridge is the aborted baby, after which Billie Joe kills himself out of remorse. When Herman Raucher met Gentry in preparation for writing a novel and screenplay based on the song, she confessed that she had no idea why Billie Joe killed himself. Gentry has commented on the song, saying that its real theme was indifference.

Those questions are of secondary importance in my mind. The story of Billie Joe has two more interesting underlying themes. First, the illustration of a group of peoples' reactions to the life and death of Billie Joe, and its subsequent effect on their lives, is made. Second, the obvious gap between the girl and her mother is shown when both women experience a common loss (first Billie Joe, and later, Papa), and yet Mama and the girl are unable to recognize their mutual loss or share their grief.

The bridge mentioned in this song collapsed in June 1972.  It crossed the Tallahatchie River at Money, about ten miles north of Greenwood, Mississippi and has since been replaced. The November 10, 1967 issue of Life Magazine contained a photo of Gentry crossing the original bridge. Even the Tallahatchie Bridge is gone. What’s left in life?

Congressman Weiner, the name says it all.

JUNE 2, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
June 2 is … National Rocky Road Day. The ice cream or just a tough patch?

It appears the mayor of Chicago has devised a method of relieving congestion on the highways leading into Chicago. He has decided that anytime the driving time on a highway is longer than 50 minutes, the highway will be closed because it is too busy.

The United States Congress has been playing games with our national budget for years. Congress did not pass a budget in 2010. Congress has delayed passing a budget in 2011, constantly approving ‘continuing resolutions’ and temporary spending plans. Now they are playing with the debt ceiling increase. The House voted on Tuesday not to raise the debt ceiling.

This is not a final vote and everybody and their cousin knows the debt increase will be approved. The Republicans will stamp their feet, demand concessions and spending cuts, agree to a non-mandated set of spending cuts and raise the debt ceiling. Nothing of any significance will be accomplished but both sides will tell us how they won and saved our economy, our nation and our future. The only way to save this nation is to get rid of everyone in Congress and the Executive branch and start over.

The City of Chicago, the third largest city in the world’s richest nation, has cancelled the City’s Fourth of July fireworks display. It is blaming cost. The City did not cancel the gay pride parade, the St Patrick’s Day Parade, the Puerto Rican parade, the Bud Billiken Parade or the Columbus Day Parade. All of those celebrations are geared for gays, Catholics, Irish, Puerto Ricans, African-Americans and Italians. Why screw patriotic Americans? The City of Chicago panders to minorities and special interest groups but will not give the average American his day on our nation’s birthday. It likely will not be a problem, however, since if it is hot on July 4th, the City will be closed anyway.

President Obama appears unaware there is a recession going on for everyone but federal government employees.  Limousines, the very symbol of wealth and excess, are usually the domain of corporate executives and the rich. But the number of limos owned by Uncle Sam increased by 73 percent during the first two years of the Obama administration, according to an analysis of records by iWatch News.

Most of the increase was recorded in Hillary Clinton's State Department. Obama administration officials said most of the increase reflects an enhanced effort to protect diplomats and other government officials in a dangerous world. But a watchdog group says the abundance of limos sends the wrong message in the midst of a budget crisis. The increase in limos comes to light on the heels of an executive order from President Obama last week that charges agencies to increase the fuel efficiency of their fleets.

According to General Services Agency Administration data, the number of limousines in the federal fleet increased from 238 in fiscal 2008, the last year of the George W. Bush administration, to 412 in 2010. Much of the 73 percent increase--111 of the 174 additional limos--took place in fiscal 2009, more than eight months of which corresponded with Obama's first year in office.  However, some of those purchases could reflect requests made by the Bush administration during an appropriation process that would have begun in the spring of 2008.

We have an Agency that is funded to watch this stuff but it now claims they cannot accurately count the limos the government owns. The GSA said its limousine numbers are not reliable, even though the federal fleet numbers are officially recorded every year.  In a statement, GSA spokeswoman Sara Merriam said, "The categories in the Fleet Report are overly broad, and the term 'limousine' is not defined," adding that "vehicles represented as limousines can range from protective duty vehicles to sedans." Asked whether the GSA actually knows how many limos it has in its fleet, Merriam responded that GSA "cannot say that its report accurately reflects the number of limousines."  Why does this Agency exist? We are not talking bullets or G.I. socks; we are talking about just over 400 cars. Somebody could count the wheels and divide by four. The answer is the number of limos the government owns.

So a Congressman’s Twitter account sent a picture of a man’s lower body, in underwear, with a bulge where most penis’ are. Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY), too bad for that name, says he did not send the photo to a 21 year-old female college student in Seattle but he would not say the photo is not of him. What a bunch of clowns in Congressman. These people are too stupid to learn from the last idiot that did something similar. Our country is being run by pornagraphic, ignorant morons too stupid to delete the send button on all their electronic devices.

God help us. The people in Washington are not going to.
