I wish a few more murderers and rapists lived or at least got caught in Virginia. Virginia put a female to death on Thursday evening. Her name was Teresa Lewis. She was the first woman put to death in the United States 2005 and the first woman Virginia executed since 1912. The 41 year old woman paid two men to kill her husband and stepson in 2002 for $250,000.00 in life insurance proceeds. The life insurance policy covered the stepson.

The stepson entered the United States Army Reserve in 2000, two years before his father married his eventual murderer. When he was called to active duty in 2002 to serve his country, he purchased the life insurance policy. He named his father as the beneficiary. Lewis had to kill the stepson to kick the insurance benefits in. She then had to kill her husband so he was not around to collect the benefits. As the surviving spouse, it is not clear if a Will was involved, she would receive his estate, including the $250,000.00.

Lewis convinced two men to kill her husband and stepson by paying them with sex, drugs and a promise of a portion of the insurance money. She arranged for the men to have sex with her 16 year old daughter in a mall parking lot as part of the payment.

On October 30, 2002, Lewis slept with her husband. The stepson was staying with them in their house trailer. As her husband and stepson slept peacefully in their beds, Lewis let the two other killers into the trailer who shot the men with the two shotguns Lewis had purchased for them.

The two shooters received life in prison. One of them committed suicide in 2006. That saved the State of Virginia a bunch of money.

As with many death row inmates, Lewis found God in prison, although she did practice her religion off and on throughout her life. I didn’t know God was missing or I might have been looking for him myself. Who knew he was living in a Virginia prison

Virginia, which is only behind Texas in the number of executions it performs, received over 7,300 appeals for Lewis’s life. Obviously they were turned down. The Courts refused to intervene. It is good to see the Courts get out of the way. Lewis was convicted and sentenced under Virginia law. The Courts only job is to make sure her Constitutional rights were not infringed. If they weren’t, and they weren’t, the Courts have no business overriding the will of the people. Courts should interpret and enforce the laws, not make the law. That is what we have legislators for. Activist Judges are always trying to make law from the bench when they realize it will not happen at the ballot box. This puts the power of the entire electorate into the hands of one person who is well paid, has excellent benefits, plenty of paid time off and a great pension plan. Not exactly your average Joe 6-pack.

Teresa Lewis was the eleventh woman put to death in the United States since 1976, when the United States Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty. Over 1,200 people have been executed during that time period.

I have read this before but I will not guarantee it is accurate

We've all seen statues of famous people who fought famous battles but most people don't know that if the person is featured on a horse, how the horse is positioned tells you a little history about the person. If the horse has both front hooves in the air the person was killed instantly in battle. If one leg is up the person died of wounds received in battle. But, if the horse has all four legs on the ground he was an important part of a famous battle but actually died a natural death.

Cows can be lead upstairs gut they will not go down stairs. The original formula resulted in Coca Cola being green.

It appears the President of Iran is a bigger waste of oxygen than I thought. He spoke at the U.N. yesterday and said something to the effect that everyone knows the United States of America perpetrated the 9/11 attacks to fix our faltering economy. It does not seem to matter to him we were in a pretty robust economic time period on September 11, 2001 at least until the attack or that the hijackers were not American citizens. Several U. N. delegates, including the United States and Great Britain got up and left the room he was speaking in during his speech in a rather sagacious display of “go to hell”. Way to go, folks.

I know murder is illegal. I also know our government has killed and attempted to kill world leaders throughout our history. Why do we have a CIA? Take this imbecile out. It would have been a perfect time while he was in New York City. I think we would survive a little bad press around the world. Hell, half the world hates us anyway. Let’s give them a real reason to hate us.

The U. S. government has finally acted on the drug Avandia, a drug for diabetes. I was prescribed Avandia by my doctor several years ago. Within months, I suffered congestive heart failure. After a week in the hospital, I decided to stop taking the drug, against my doctor’s advice. Five years later, I suffered a stroke. Congestive heart failure and stroke are known side effects of Avandia.

The drug was approved for treatment of type II diabetes in the early 2000s by the FDA. Almost immediately, the drug was getting terrible reviews, being linked to many side effects. The response of the FDA and the manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline was the disease it was treating was worse without the drug than with its use. The drug was approved in an expedited manner. The approval process took less time than the post-approval drug investigation that resulted in its restricted use. Europe banned the drug’s use entirely.

It is obvious the government does not know how to regulate drug and food use and manufacture, the purpose for the FDA to exist. In the last decade, many drugs have been banned or severely restricted after the FDA approved them.

Remember Fen-Phen, for obesity treatment. VIOXX, for arthritis pain. Baycol, for high cholesterol. Bextra, for arthritis. This is just a sample of banned drugs. We also have the food regulation part of this agency. Remember spinach a year or two ago. Eggs this year, Taco Bell tomatoes a few years ago. Numerous meat recalls. The FDA did nothing to stop any of these problems. It did not prevent them. It only got involved after the free market system responded to a problem.

The FDA is sure to reinvent the food pyramid and force restaurants to post calories and other nutritional information. At least we will know how many calories are in the food product we are eating that kills us.

While listening to the White Sox on the radio on Wednesday afternoon, the play-by-play announcer, Ed Farmer, mentioned Robin Ventura. Ventura attended Oklahoma State and played college baseball. In 1987 he hit safely in 58 consecutive games. That is a Division I college baseball record. According to Ed Farmer, the streak was snapped in a game against Stanford. The pitcher for Stanford was Jack McDowell. Ventura and McDowell were teammates with the Chicago White Sox. Each player started their professional careers and made their Major League debut with the White Sox.

Dr. Obama arrives in your house today. The health care reform act was passed six months ago. Have you noticed the improvement in our countries health care? Today, six significant aspects of the law, officially known as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, go into effect. It is only coincidence the provisions will be effective less than six weeks before the November elections. Apparently the Democrats thought, wrongly, this legislation would be popular and give them a boost just in time for election day. Isn’t it amazing a thought, law or idea came out of Congress that did not work as promised.

The provisions that become enforceable law today include;

1.      Children of insured parents can remain on their parents policy until they are 26;

2.      Lifetime caps on benefits and costs of treatments can no longer be imposed on the insured by insurance companies;

3.      Preventive services are now covered;

4.      Insurers cannot deny coverage to children with a pre-existing condition;

5.      Insurance companies must work together and form high-risk pools to cover adults with pre-existing conditions;

6.      Insurance companies can only terminate coverage for customer fraud.

I assume they can terminate coverage for non-payment of premiums.

It will be some time before the impact of these changes in the law will be assessed. Most people believe it will result in higher costs. Common sense leads to that conclusion. Some aspects of the law take actuarial studies out of the equation. Why determine the concept of probabilities when the law forces insurance companies to cover everybody regardless of your historical probability to get a particular disease or you already have a disease.

The health care reform act is a game changer for the insurance industry. Insurance companies are now an arm of the federal government just spreading the wealth from those with it to those without it. Life is not always fair. No matter how hard Washington D. C. tries, you cannot legislate fairness. Forcing you ideas upon a majority of citizens that are against it is not democracy. It is an attempt to be a benevolent monarchy.

President Obama begins his “I want another Nobel Prize” tour today by speaking at the U. N. President Obama spoke there last year and won the Nobel Peace Prize ten days later. This year, he must be looking for the Nobel Prize in medicine by touting his health care reform before the U. N. I do not think he can brag about the two wars he is still waging, poorly, to get another Nobel Peace Prize.

President Lincoln’s secretary was named Kennedy. President Kennedy’s secretary was named Lincoln.

In this day and age, people sometimes decide they want to get away, disappear or hide their existence and assets. This is not an easy thing to do. The government has an enormous amount of resources devoted to tracking us. It does not seem to work to track criminals and terrorists, but in tracks the average Jill and Joe effectively.

In addition to the government, many companies and at least two entire industries are devoted to finding people, the collection industry and the private detective, security industry. The web is full of sites that will help locate people. Facebook, Twitter and a host of other social networking sites can be searched to find people.

People disappear, or want to, for many reasons. They may want to avoid arrest. They may be on the run from an enemy. They may be getting a divorce and don’t want the spouse to get their money. Hey may be trying to get out of a financial obligation, like child support or repaying a credit card. No matter the reason a person wants to disappear, it takes some research and planning to do it properly. Nothing, however, is foolproof. The bigger the fool, the bigger the chance you will not do it right.

Before Homeland security was all the rage, changing identities was easier. You just had to research infant deaths from about the time you were born. It has only been the last twenty years or so, parents needed a Social Security number for their children to claim the exemption. Now, many hospitals get the child a Social Security number before the child leaves the hospital. Big brother is watching.

Once you have an infant death picked out, you could get a birth certificate. Take that to the Social Security Office and have a Social Security number issued under the infant’s name. Then, go to the Secretary of State and have a driver’s license issued. Once completed, you had a new identity.

Currently, you cannot get copies of the birth or death certificates without a reason or filling out a paper trail. You almost always need an I.D. As has always been the case, you may be able to find an employee that works in the records office that will help you. This is illegal but many things are.

To hide assets, put as much as you can into prepaid gift cards. Cash is also hard to trace. Bank accounts are traceable as our safe deposit boxes, so avoid them.

Always communicate with prepaid pay-as-you-go cell phones. Buy prepaid phone cards to reload minutes. None of these are traceable. If you want to communicate by the internet, always go to free WiFi cafes or public libraries. Never establish a regular schedule of contact.

Phone records are not matters of public records, but they can be subpoenaed or access to them gained illegally. Before you relocate, call several places you are not going to. Call Realtors, apartment rental companies and utilities. If someone gains access to your phone records, this will lead the investigators on a wild goose chase, eating into their time and resources.

If you need to work, stay with smaller companies. They have a tendency to be less compliant with government regulations. Try to get hired as a sub-contractor so you will not get a W-2, but rather a 1099 form. This makes you harder to track down by the IRS or with their forms.

In a recent column, I explored the concept of disappearing. Why you would want to do that is not my concern unless you are my client.

If you are not a client of mine and I have a client that wants to find you, the first place to start would be to conduct a skip trace. This assumes you are a member of a credit reporting bureau, like Equifax or Standard & Poor’s. These companies can give you credit card information, sometimes with addresses.

You can try the U. S. Post Office. There was a time when, for a small fee, you

You can also go to the Secretary of State’s Office and purchase a driving abstract. You will need the full name and address. If you have Social Security number or driver’s license number it will help. So will the date of birth. You will have to fill out a form telling why you need the abstract, but it is self-explanatory.

I would also mail the person a piece of mail, by certified mail, return receipt requested. This may be returned but could have expired forwarding information on it.

A little detective work could also help. Stop by the address you have. Check the mail box. Write down any return address info on mail in the box. Do not steal the mail. Do not open the mail. It pays to know when local utility bills are sent out. You can then figure out what utilities to contact. Additionally, the utilities may be in the name of someone else. You can then skip trace that person.

The web is full of resources, some free, some inexpensive and some quite expensive. Try the free White Pages search for an address. It is helpful if you have a phone number, even a cell phone number. You can upgrade to People Search. Just Google that term to get a list of similar sites. Intelius is another inexpensive people search website.

If you know where the person went to high school, find that website or another classmate, where are they now?, Website. Visit the profile area. If person is not in it, go to a chat room and post a question about person, saying you are trying to find him/her.

The IRS may also offer some help. If you have filed a collection or other type of case against the person, you can subpoena records from IRS, utilities, including phone companies, do not forget cell phone companies, schools, former employers, insurance companies or about anyone your target had regular contact with. The party may object to giving up records, but let them make the call, not you. The Judge will decide if it is reasonable.

Always go for phone records for who you are looking for and their friends, parents, brothers and sisters. You might find a number that always calls the parents. That could be a son or daughter. That could be your target.

Make contact with Realtors, landlords and property managers in your area. They may be helpful, especially if the person took off owing them money.

Do not break the law or encourage others to break the law. A gift card every now and then as a show of appreciation is not illegal. Make sure it is not tied to the giving of secret information. Loose lips are everywhere, like in a tavern, after a few drinks.

 An easy place to search is the Courthouse. All court records are a matter of public record. Most Circuit Clerk’s Offices have computerized searches available. The same is true of land records. Search a name or piece of property at the Recorder of Deeds. These types of records, especially older ones, may have Social Security numbers in the file. Traffic ticket files will have the driver’s license number on the ticket.

If you have clients with a need to track people down, write them a detailed information sheet. Get the Social Security #, Driver’s License #, employer, last two employers, last three addresses, Banking information, next of kin, parents, marital status, high school, college and make of car with license number.

 Good luck with our skip tracing. If you are trying to hide, just use this information in reverse.

Illinois Senate race, unfortunately, somebody is going to win

An itinerant stable hand at Arlington Racetrack in Arlington Heights, IL was arrested Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 for having sex with a racehorse. Itinerant workers at Arlington, like most racetracks, live at the track, near the stables, behind the scenes, caring for the horses 24/7. Generally, these workers are foreign and travel from track to track, working at the tracks when they are running races.

This guy is charged with having sexual contact with a female horse named Buzz My Bell. At least it was a female horse. The stable hand, Esbin Dionel Cal-Orozco, 28, had his bond set at $ 25,000.00 for the class 4 felony.

I am not sure which is worse, the guy was charged with this activity or that we actually have had to make it a crime? Obviously, it has happened before.

The election is less than sixty days away. In Illinois, we have a chance to pick a person to replace President Obama in the Senate. I do not count Roland (wake me up when it’s over) Burris. In Delaware, they have the chance to replace Joe Biden in the Senate. There is a strong possibility both races will be won by the other party. That is giving the administration a vote of confidence.

In Delaware, the upset victory of the Tea Party candidate may have helped the Democrats keep that seat. Christine O’Donnell is perceived as unelectable in a statewide race against the other party. Her activist stance and lack of voting record make her a wild-card, crap-shoot candidate. It will be interesting to see if the Republicans provide her with enough financial support to make her a viable candidate or a punch-line in a joke in the future. History is full of candidates like her that stunningly win in the primary just to be quickly forgotten in the general election. We will see.

Illinois is a different story. The Republicans have strongly backed Mark Kirk, a five-term Congressman, for the seat. He won the primary as the party-backed candidate. The Republican Party is going all out to win this seat. Kirk is getting huge sums of money to run hard. Unfortunately, he is a liar, an admitted liar. One of his explanations was that he “misremembered wrongly” Even his explanations are a lie. His lies mostly deal with his military service. He bragged about his combat experience when he has none. He has served in the military; thank you for that but he apparently did it to pump up his electability, not to serve his country. To lie about your service record for personal gain is reprehensible. I am sure other lies he has told or bragged about will come out in the next six weeks. And I am equally sure Kirk will have a lie to explain them. He is not much of a choice and I generally vote Republican.

The Democrats have also strongly backed a candidate, Alexi Giannoulias, the State of Illinois Treasurer. He is a young man with a short voting record. He has a long list of accomplishments he takes credit for but few people agree with. He too has been caught in several significant lies during the campaign. The Democrats want to keep this seat bad enough, President Obama has come to Illinois to campaign for Giannoulias.

One piece of baggage Giannoulias cannot talk his way out of is his ties to a failed bank, owned by him and his family. The Federal government took control of the bank earlier this year. Giannoulias keeps saying he had nothing to do with the bank failing even though he earned over $100,000.00 a year from the bank. He must have done something to be paid. Another troubling aspect of his families bank and his work for it are the millions of dollars in loans granted to known organized crime figures. Some of the loans were made and funded while these people were under indictment. Some of the loans were for projects in Florida, making it hard for the bank to verity progress. Tony Reszko is one of the borrowers money was loaned to. He now sits in jail, convicted in his own case and a potential witness in the ‘Blago’ debacle. Giannoulias keeps saying he had nothing to do with the Mafia loans even though it was a family owned bank where he worked. He was not a teller. He worked in the loan department but every time a questionable loan comes up, Giannoulias says he was not involved. Who was? Perhaps the bank would not have failed and cost the taxpayers’ money if he had been doing his job.

I am sure a Chicago newspaper is sitting on a story detailing more questionable loans at his bank, just waiting until the election is closer before running the story.

It is too bad the ballot does not have a “None of the above” box to check for this race. One of these undeserving men will win while Illinois voters lose.
