The stock market needs an SOS.

AUGUST 11, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

August 11 is … Presidential Joke Day

The clown we have for a President now is a National joke, unfortunately, the joke is on us.

The rioting in England is just as pointless and predictable as the rioting in this country. The rioters are over 90% males under the age of 25. The per centage of minorities in the rioting crowds is significantly higher than the per centage of minorities in the general population. On Tuesday night, the only store or building not ruined or damaged by rioters in a several block area was a book store. These morons cannot read and do not want to learn.

We need an SOS for our country; it keeps sinking deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper. The international distress call, SOS, which replaced CQD (All stations -- distress!), was first used by an American ship on this day in 1909. The ocean liner Arapahoe found itself in trouble off Cape Hatteras, NC. The ship’s wireless operator, T. D. Haubner, radioed for help when his ship lost its screw propeller near the ‘Graveyard of the Atlantic’, Diamond Shoals. The call was heard by the United Wireless station at Hatteras.

Contrary to popular opinion, SOS (which has no stops between the letters, the signal being a continuous signal of three dots, three dashes and three dots) is not an acronym for any series of words such as Save Our Ship or Save Our Souls. The original call for distress began with the British CQ, meaning “All Stations”, used by telegraph and cable operators worldwide. The D for ’distress’ was added to CQ by the Marconi company in 1904.

In 1906, at the Berlin Radiotelegraphic Conference, the German’s general inquiry call, SOE, was suggested as an international distress signal. Changing the E to S gave the signal its unmistakeable character, and SOS was officially ratified as the international distress signal in 1908, although it was not officially adopted by the USA until 1912 (prompted by the Titanic tragedy). It is interesting to note that the Titanic’s radio operator sent Marconi’s CQD code several times before using the four-year-old international SOS signal some twenty minutes later ... as Marconi waited in NY to make the return trip to England on the ill-fated ship. Globe Wireless, a Louisiana company, began operation that same year, as rules and regulations following the sinking of the Titanic included the requirement that all ships carry equipment capable of sending and receiving Morse code messages. On July 12, 1999, Globe Wireless broadcast its last Morse code message to ships, five months after Morse code was no longer an internationally acceptable form of communication for ships at sea. Globe’s was the last service of its kind in North America.

Morse code and its SOS signal began its demise in the 1960s as faster more efficient forms of transmission became available. Today, most ships use mobile phones, fax machines, and e-mail to communicate. The Global Maritime Distress and Safety system, which uses the satellite-based Global Positioning System, is now the internationally accepted manner in which to transmit a ship’s exact location and problem ... instantly. In comparison, SOS and other Morse code transmissions which were the high tech methods of 1909, were “very slow, unreliable ... if you’re lucky, you can send 25 words a minute”, stated Globe Wireless Manager Karl Halvorsen. His and other similar companies around the world now provide the instant message services to ships that are used on land.

SOS ...---... Morse code is sinking.

The Stock Market is going up 500 one day, going down 500 the next day, going back up hundreds and going back down hundreds. Is there really any legitimate reason for this other than greed. Wall Street types spend a lot of time telling us how smart they are. They like to tell us we don’t get it but they do. The downgrade by S & P of the United States credit rating was going to be the end of the financial world as we know it. That didn’t happen. The stock market fluctuates several hundred points when Warren Buffett farts. It is no big deal. Is there anyone in the world who honestly believes any other entity in the world is a better investment risk than the United States of America? If the United States of America quits paying its bills or goes bankrupt, all the warning or posturing in the world will not help. What you will need then is not Chinese bonds but ammunition for your weapons.

On this date in 1984 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan was preparing for his weekly radio broadcast when, during testing of the microphone, the President said of the Soviet Union, “...I have signed legislation that will outlaw Russia. We begin bombing in five minutes.“ The remark was made during a time when technicians had the microphone open and the President didn’t think he was being heard. He was just jesting as he was testing. Funny, actually, that this could happen to ‘Dutch’ Reagan -- a former radio sportscaster for WHO in Des Moines, Iowa and other radio stations -- not to mention TV and film. The remark, literally, bombed ... though nothing more serious happened.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.

Pay backs can be a bitch. The jury of Warren Jeffs peers took less than thirty minutes to reach a sentence for the convicted rapist and pedophile.

Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting two underage followers he took as brides in what his church deemed "spiritual marriages."

The head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stood quietly as the decision of the Texas jury was read Tuesday. He received the maximum sentence on both counts.

The jury deliberated less than half an hour. The 55-year-old Jeffs was convicted Thursday. During the trial, prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old.

Jeffs is the eighth FLDS man convicted since a raid of a ranch run by the church, which believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven.

I wonder how long it will take for us to see real relief at the pump. The price always seems to rise immediately and in big increments but it comes down slowly, a penny at a time. Oil's plunge to its lowest price of the year should provide Americans with some relief at the pump. But that may not be enough to calm their fears about the economy.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude fell 6.4 percent, to settle at $81.31 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Monday. That was the lowest settlement price of the year for crude, which is down about 30 percent from its high in April. Crude's falling price means lower costs in many parts of the U.S. economy. Airlines pay less for fuel, the price of plastics can fall and motorists see pump prices ease. But when the economy looks weak, consumers keep a tighter grip on the wallets, and won't necessarily spend more, even when energy costs are falling.

Worries about jobs, incomes and home values will overshadow falling gas prices, for example. Some analysts believe consumers and businesses will tuck money they don't spend on gas and diesel into savings until there is more clarity about where the economy is headed. And the economy's outlook is cloudy for now. Ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Friday said it no longer considered U.S. Treasury debt one of safest investments in the world. The news followed a number of gloomy reports that showed growth in the U.S. was faltering, which means less demand for energy.

Energy analyst Jim Ritterbusch believes that uncertainty will take months to resolve, prompting Americans to remain careful about how much they spend. The industry is already setting the groundwork for small price decreases. They are going to blame the consumer for not spending enough money, totally ignoring the fact we do not have money since the oil industry has been gouging us for years.

Who didn’t see this coming? A hotel maid who accuses ex-International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault sued him Monday over what she calls a "violent and sadistic" attack in an upscale suite that left her life "in shambles."

Lawyers for the maid, Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo, wrote in the lawsuit that Strauss-Kahn "intentionally, brutally and violently sexually assaulted Ms. Diallo and in the process humiliated, degraded, violated and robbed Ms. Diallo of her dignity as a woman." The lawyers, Kenneth Thompson and Douglas Wigdor, promised to tell a jury about other instances when Strauss-Kahn sexually attacked women in hotel rooms and apartments, coerced employees into complying with sexual demands or accosted women with inappropriate sexual remarks and tried to get them to perform sexual acts.

They said the lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, would "redress the violent and sadistic attack by defendant Strauss-Kahn on Nafissatou Diallo when he sexually assaulted" her on May 14 at the Sofitel hotel in midtown Manhattan. The lawsuit says Strauss-Kahn injured Diallo's shoulder, bruised her vagina, tore her pantyhose and violently grabbed the back of her head during the attack.

The lawsuit, filed in state court in the Bronx, accuses Strauss-Kahn of acting like a common criminal afterward, fleeing the hotel so quickly that he left behind traces of his semen, along with bloody tissues. "In his haste to flee the scene of a crime, he rushed out of the hotel with toothpaste smeared on the outside of his mouth and was looking over his shoulders," the lawsuit says. The attack has left Diallo physically and psychologically harmed, with permanent damage done to her professional and personal reputations along with severe mental anguish from which she may never fully recover, the lawsuit says. She suffers great emotional distress, humiliation, depression and physical pain, and the experience has "left Ms. Diallo's life and her young daughter's life in shambles," it says.

Assuming she gets even nuisance value for this lawsuit, this will likely end up being the best thing that ever happened to her. I do not condone the activity he allegedly engaged in but I do not believe the maid. Money is apparently good enough for her. Had she been paid in advance, it would be prostitution.

I love Lucy

AUGUST 8, 2011

August 8 is … Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night

Tell me how that works out for you.

On Saturday, JonBenet Ramsay would have been 21 years-old. Also on Saturday, Lucille Ball would have been 100 years-old. Here are fifteen tidbits of information about Ms. Ball you may not have known. JonBenet did not live long enough for fifteen of anything to occur in her short-tragic life.

1. After two decades spent trying to become a movie superstar, Lucille Ball was 40 years old when she finally became a Hollywood player with the debut of 'I Love Lucy' in 1951.

2. Lucy was not only a genius performer, but a smart, innovative businesswoman: she and husband/co-star Desi Arnaz introduced the idea of syndicating TV shows, and she was the first woman to own her own film studio (Desilu).

3. Among the other TV series produced by Desilu: 'Star Trek,' 'The Untouchables' and 'Mission: Impossible.'

4. She attended acting school in New York City ... with Bette Davis.

5. Like most other actresses in Hollywood, Lucy auditioned for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind.' But on her way to audition for producer David O. Selznick, she got caught in a rainstorm, was drenched, and had to audition wearing nothing but a long sweater she'd borrowed from Selznick's assistant.

6. Lucy was not only the Chesterfield cigarette girl, but also a Ziegfield Girl and Goldwyn Girl.

7. One of the most beloved episodes of 'I Love Lucy' -- 'Harpo Marx' -- guest-starred Harpo Marx and found Lucy and Harpo re-creating the Marx Brothers' famous mirror scene from 'Duck Soup.' Earlier in her career, Ball had starred with the Marxes in the big-screen comedy 'Room Service,' and with another famous comedy group, the Three Stooges, in the comedy short 'Three Little Pigskins.'

8. The birth of Little Ricky on 'I Love Lucy' -- and of Desi Arnaz Jr. in real life -- was featured on the very first TV Guide cover in 1953.

9. Desi Jr. dated the offspring of another Hollywood diva: Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli.

10. Lucy was a big fan of the sitcom 'Three's Company.' She even hosted a clip show special of the series in 1982.

11. In 1986, Lucy attempted a comeback with the dismal Aaron Spelling-produced ABC sitcom 'Life With Lucy' in 1986. The show, which found Lucy playing Lucy Barker, a widowed grandma who helped run her late husband's hardware store, also featured her 'The Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy' co-star Gale Gordon, but the rest of the cast was so forgettable that the comedy only aired for eight episodes before plummeting ratings led to its cancelation.

12. Lucy's last public appearance was in March 1989, at the 61st Oscar ceremony. She died the next month.

13. Lucy is in the National Women's Hall of Fame, which includes just one other TV star: Oprah Winfrey.

14. Lucy was a big fan of Betty White and 'The Golden Girls,' and appeared with White on various versions of the game show 'Password.' Lucy's mother, DeDe, was a close friend of Betty White's mother, Tess.

15. Lucy was an uncredited producer on the 1983 Tom Cruise football drama 'All the Right Moves.' Her second husband, Gary Morton, had co-produced the film via Lucy's Lucille Ball Productions.

Betty White seems to have outlived all of her old gang. You go Betty.

30 dead Americans; for what?

AUGUST 7, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

August 7 is … Sea Serpent Day

30 dead Americans, many were Navy Seals; they died for an ungrateful world in a nation that only views America as an ATM machine. Enough is enough. Bring them home now and tell the world to go to hell or deal with it without the U. S.

This guy has a lot of children. Remember when the war in Libya we are not fighting was only going to last a few days after we did not start it. Well it is still going on, we are still not fighting and as usual for wars we involve ourselves in, we are not winning. What is going to happen when a plane or helicopter crashes in Libya killing numerous Americans?

It has been reported that Libya's rebels said Friday they have reports that Moammar Gadhafi's youngest son, who commands one of the regime's strongest military brigades, was killed in a NATO airstrike in the western town of Zlitan. NATO said in a statement that it was aware of the reports that Khamis Gadhafi had been killed, but it did not confirm his death. It said alliance strikes on Thursday night hit an ammunition depot and military police facility in Zlitan, which is the main front of fighting between rebels and Gadhafi's troops, 90 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli.

Mohammed al-Rajali, a spokesman for the rebel leadership in the eastern stronghold of Benghazi said there were unconfirmed reports Khamis was among 32 troops killed when NATO hit a government operations center early Friday. "We want to capture all of these criminals and try them and bring them to justice but if killing them this way will stop the bloodshed I think it is another option," al-Rajali told The Associated Press.

Libyan government officials could also not be reached for comment.

The death of the 27-year-old Khamis Gadhafi would be a significant blow to the regime's efforts to fight off the rebels. He commands the 32nd Brigade, also known simply as the Khamis Brigade, one of the best trained and equipped units in the Libyan military. Khamis' troops have been fighting rebels in and around the western town of Zlitan for months. The town is a major obstacle in the path of rebels from the nearby city of Misrata trying to make their way to the capital, Tripoli. The civil war has largely devolved into a stalemate - both at Zlitan and further east, around the oil port of Brega.

This isn't the first time Khamis has been reported dead by rebel forces.

In late March, rumors circulated that he was killed in an airstrike, only to be shown days later on state television attending a celebration in his honor at his father's Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli.

Gadhafi's sons and a daughter have all played roles in their father's regime, some in diplomatic or business roles. His sons Mutassim, Khamis and al-Saadi all head military brigades. A third son, Seif al-Islam, has become the Western face of the regime and before the uprising began in February was put forth as the reformer, heading a variety of youth organizations.

In May, Libyan officials announced on state TV that another of Gadhafi's seven biological sons, Seif al-Arab, was killed along with three of Moammar Gadhafi's grandchildren in a NATO airstrike against his house in the Tripoli neighborhood of Ghargour. The Libyan leader and his wife were inside but escaped unharmed, according to Libyan officials. Khamis was injured in U.S. bombing raids in 1986 shortly after Libya was blamed for masterminding a bombing in West Berlin that killed an American soldier and woman. He would have been 2 or 3 years old at the time.

In February, eight days before the Libyan uprising began, Khamis Gadhafi was given a VIP tour of the Air Force Academy in Colorado during a U.S. tour. After he returned home, he led forces loyal to his father in an assault on the rebel-held city of Zawiya, where civilian protests against his father were crushed.

Friday afternoon, after the markets closed, S&P downgraded the credit rating of the United States from AAA to AA+. The other two major rating services did not follow suit.

S & P just downgraded itself into insignificance. They are the same company that blindly sat around while junk bonds flourished in the eighties; they sat around blindly during the real estate collapse that is still going on; they sat around blindly while huge companies in their industry failed during the past decade, leading to government bailouts they championed then. Now they are downgrading our government for doing what they wanted done.

I have never bought or sold anything because of what S & P said. I think S & P is going to find out no one cares about their opinion. Under what authority does S & P operate. They have proved they do not know what they are doing. S & P has no credibility in the financial world. This move demonstrates they have no loyalty to the United States of America. Some financial companies will use this downgrade as a reason to up interest rates on Americans. The companies that take advantage of this should be boycotted.

S & P will be out of business within 18 months. We should all downgrade the company to the history pile.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.

I think Casey Anthony would have loved this. She would have fit right in. A Florida corrections officer didn't just lust for power, he used his power for lust, according to former co-workers and inmates under his watch.

A Pompano detention center took on an "orgy"-like atmosphere with female inmates dancing topless and performing sex acts on one another as deputy Mason Chibnick looked on, The Orlando Sentinel reported. Games of "Truth or Dare" were common when Chibnick was on duty. Accusers said he had sex with one inmate.

Chibnick, who's been transferred to work in a men's jail, also allegedly sent a picture of his penis to a former inmate's sister and was seen with an inmate entering a closet, the paper reported.

The allegations sparked an investigation that concluded he broke the code of ethics. He was given a counseling slip that outlined department policies, but has faced no other discipline. Five colleagues testified against him, along with four inmates, although two other prisoners defended him, The Sentinel reported. Chibnick asked for a transfer in April, because he didn't feel "comfortable" working with female inmates, according to the Orlando paper. He closed his Facebook account, which he'd allegedly used to track down ex-inmates, but didn't share his cellphone records with investigators who were exploring charges he'd sent an explicit picture to an inmate's sister. Officials from the Broward County Sheriff's Office didn't respond to repeated inquiries from The Huffington Post.

Earlier in the year, AOL Weird New reported on another Florida prison guard who was also found in violation of ethics guidelines (as well as the law). Master corrections officer Joseph Jones, 31, was accused of trying to smuggle drugs into a Marion County jail inside of a hoagie.

Boy, they know how to run prisons in Florida and they use the death-penalty, it cannot be all bad.

It takes all kind to run this world and Texas has at least one of every kind. From HuffPost, a Texas jury convicted polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs of child sexual assault Thursday in a case stemming from two young followers he took as brides in what his church calls "spiritual marriages." The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stood stone-faced as the verdict was read.

Jeffs, who acted as his own attorney, faces up to life in prison. The jury went immediately into sentencing proceedings. They had deliberated on a verdict for more than three hours. Prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. They also played audio recordings in which Jeffs was heard instructing young women on how to please him sexually.

Jeffs has claimed he was the victim of religious persecution. The FLDS, which has at least 10,000 members nationwide, is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism. The church believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven and that Jeffs is God's spokesman on earth.

Police had raided the group's remote West Texas ranch in April 2008, finding women dressed in frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century as well as seeing underage girls who were clearly pregnant. The call to an abuse hotline that spurred the raid turned out to be a hoax, and more than 400 children who had been placed in protective custody were eventually returned to their families.

Jeffs stood mute and expressionless, staring at the floor, for all but a few seconds of the half hour he was allotted for a closing argument on Thursday. At one point he mumbled, "I am peace," and said no more.

Prosecutors said the case had nothing to do with his church or his beliefs. "You have heard the defendant make repeated arguments about religious freedoms," said lead prosecutor Eric Nichols. "Make no mistake, this case is not about any people, this case is not about any religion. It is about one individual, Warren Steed Jeffs, and his actions."

Prosecutors relied heavily on information found during the raid on the compound and after a traffic stop in Nevada in 2006, when Jeffs was arrested. Much of the material was discovered in a vault at the end of a secret passageway in the temple and another vault in an annex building. "You might have asked yourselves," Nichols said, "a lot of people may ask, why would someone record sex? ... This individual considers himself to be the prophet. Everything he did, hour after hour, he was required to keep a record of that."

On one of the tapes played at the trial, Jeffs made a reference to "drawing close" or "being close," which authorities testified is how church members refer to sex. Two female voices said "OK." "A good wife is trained for her husband and follows the spirit of peace," Jeffs was heard saying. Another audio tape included Jeffs and the younger girl from a recording made in August 2006 at the Texas compound, according to testimony from Nick Hanna, a Texas Ranger involved in the 2008 raid.

Played in court, it was difficult to decipher, but Jeffs' and a female voice are heard. He says, "I perform this service in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen," then mentions the alleged victim by name. When she says something, he responds, "don't talk while praying." Several minutes of heavy breathing followed.

The jury wore headphones to better hear the recording and also followed a transcript. One female juror covered her face with her hand as she listened.

Jeffs represented himself after firing seven attorneys in the six months leading to the trial. He broke his courtroom silence with an objection marked by a nearly hourlong speech defending polygamy, and twice threatened the judge and the court with warnings of punishment from God. He refused to cross-examine the state's witnesses, and delayed giving an opening statement until he began presenting his own defense. In that statement, he evoked images of the civil rights movement and mentioned former Mormon leader Joseph Smith Jr. He also asked the jury to remember constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.

The lone defense witness Jeffs called, church elder JD Roundy, spent about 10 minutes on the stand Thursday discussing FLDS history after 4½ hours of testimony Wednesday evening. Jeffs failed three times to remove state District Judge Barbara Walther from the case, the last rejection coming even without a hearing. He claimed Walther was biased because she issued the warrant for the original raid and was frequently updated as it progressed. Eleven other FLDS men were charged with crimes including sexual assault and bigamy. All seven of those who have been prosecuted were convicted, receiving prison sentences of between six and 75 years.

This boy is going to be a welcomed bitch to any cellblock in Texas. Texas could make money by raffling his ass off, literally, to the highest bidder.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think about.
