Slaughter in America. Authorities say a police officer was shot, three others were wounded and the gunman killed in a shootout near a train station in New York's Hudson Valley. Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik tells the Poughkeepsie Journal the wounded officers were taken to a hospital. Greg Zurawik, a spokesman for St. Francis Hospital, says the gunman died at the hospital Friday afternoon. He says the man suffered a gunshot wound but he had no other details. The shooting happened around 1 p.m. in a parking lot. No other details were immediately available. Poughkeepsie is a city of about 30,000 people about 70 miles south of Albany. Poughkeepsie was made famous, along with its park benches in the move The French Connection. Gene Hackman, dressed as Santa Claus, interrogates a suspect about picking his feet on a park bench in Poughkeepsie. It is a wonderful scene near the beginning of the film.
What is the world coming to? The Chicago-based pizza chain Giordano's has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but will continue operating with court approval to use part of a $36 million bankruptcy loan to pay employees and vendors.  The chain, known for its stuffed pizza, owes nearly $46 million to Fifth Third Bank, its main lender, according to this week's bankruptcy filing.  The company runs stores in the Chicago area, four joint-venture locations and 35 franchised restaurants. The chain sells frozen pizzas for overnight delivery. John and Eve Apostolou own the pizza chain. Attorney Michael Gesas, representing the debtors, says the pizza business is strong, but the company defaulted on real estate loans.

I recently read a list of the best 100 lines in novels. Today I am reprinting the first 50. Tomorrow I will reprint the final 50. I find this quite interesting. I hope you do too. One summer afternoon Mrs. Oedipa Maas came home from a Tupperware party whose hostess had put perhaps too much kirsch in the fondue to find that she, Oedipa, had been named executor, or she supposed executrix, of the estate of one Pierce Inverarity, a California real estate mogul who had once lost two million dollars in his spare time but still had assets numerous and tangled enough to make the job of sorting it all out more than honorary. - Thomas Pynchon, The Crying of Lot 49 (1966)

Slaughter in America;

Julie Schenecker, the woman police say killed her two children for being "mouthy," pleaded not guilty in court today. Schenecker, 50, appeared in court in Tampa, Fla., dressed in a red jail outfit, The Associated Press reported. The judge appointed the public defender's office to represent her. If convicted, Schenecker could face the death penalty. We can only hope the state of Florida does just that. Florida is one of the bright states when it comes to the death penalty. They actually use it. Police found the bodies of Schenecker's two children, Calyx, 16, and Beau, 13, in the family home on Jan. 28. Both children had been shot in the head. Police say Schenecker told investigators that she killed the children because she was tired of them talking back.

Way to go Ohio. We need more of this and executions should be done within 36 months of the crime, by law, federal and state. Ohio on Thursday executed a one-time neo-Nazi who shot to death two men and a teen more than a quarter-century ago on the campus of Cleveland State University in a shooting spree that targeted blacks. Frank Spisak, who chose to read Bible verses in German for a final statement, was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m. following an injection of sodium thiopental at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Spisak, 59, set the Ohio record for the longest time on death row before execution, at more than 27 years. He was also the last Ohio inmate to die by sodium thiopental, the scarce drug the state is giving up in favor of a more readily available substitute.
Spisak blamed the 1982 shootings on his hatred of gays, blacks and Jews and on his mental illness related to confusion about his sexual identity. Spisak identified himself as a woman and referred to himself in correspondence as Frances Spisak, a name his attorneys also used. "Heil Herr," he appeared to say when he was finished. It was unclear what he meant, as the phrase is not used in German. His struggles with the German drew snickers from witnesses, who included the daughter of one victim, two brothers of another and John Hardaway, a surviving shooting victim. "Speak English, you fool," said Jeffrey Duke, the brother of slaying victim Brian Warford.

Today I am going to provide you with copies of two press releases I have prepared and sent out. Many of you may have received one or both of these earlier if you are on my mailing list or read my Twitter or Facebook pages. This column is sort of marketing or self-promotion 101. This could cost you a lot of money to learn this stuff but not here, it is free and quite basic.

Press releases are designed to be short and to the point. The release should be dated and name the city of origin. The press release should identify the person the release is about, give a brief biography and provide pertinent contact information.

Once the basics are covered, the press release should then briefly state who, what, where, why and when about the subject matter of the press release.

At one time, press releases were used by big corporations and public relations firms. Not anymore. With the proliferation of digital content, digital delivery, E-mail and FAX, press releases should and are used by anyone with a product to get before the public or a business seeking increased traffic to its web site, phone number or office. If you are in a position to promote yourself, your business or your products, consider press releases. You can always issue multiple press releases with the first one or two just teasers for what’s coming. Do not, however, overuse the press release. If you do, people will begin to ignore your later press releases. Remember, everybody’s time is as important to them as yours is to you.

In the next several weeks and months, I am going to be producing short video programs for my law practice and books. I will direct the reader to them once they are produced and posted. This is a booming area for promotion and advertising. YouTube, Facebook and Twitter plus other social sites and your own web site make producing the program and posting same rather easy to learn and do.  The program should be between 1 ½ and 2 minutes in length. Short and to the point with some entertainment value. More is sure to come.

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

I am pleased to announce I have published another book. This book is titled A Revengeful Mix of Short Fiction.  The book consists of three stories. The first story is about the Starved Rock Murders, a true crime that happened in Utica, IL in 1960. The story is a tale of revenge over the handling of the police investigation and prosecution of the case.

The second story is another revenge tale. The revenge is taken by an American for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The revenge is carried out to mark the ten year anniversary of the Muslim terrorists’ attacks on this country. It establishes that strategic nuclear attacks are possible for the greater good.

The third story, in novella length, involves terrorists and the Mafia. They join forces for a terrorist attack at the 2011 baseball All Star game. The kidnapping plot goes bad and true Americans come to the rescue. Good action read with plenty of gun play and behind the scene glimpses into Major League Baseball.

The book can be found on www.Amazon.com and at http://www.smashwords.com/. It will be available at Barnes and Noble shortly as well as other places. I will keep you up to date. I should be ready to publish another book by this fall, in time for Christmas 2011.

It is time to get into the ereaders and epublishing. Borders filed for bankruptcy yesterday. Most people blame this on their failure to get into ereaders and epublishing as Amazon and Barnes and Noble did as well as other book sellers and web sites. A market will always exist for the printed book but it will be a specialty item. It is time to join the digital revolution.

Slaughter in America, again;

A man opened fire on authorities trying to serve a warrant in West Virginia this morning, fatally wounding one deputy U.S. marshal and injuring two others before being shot dead by law enforcement officials, authorities said. Several marshals went to the home in Elkins around 8:30 a.m. to serve a warrant for the arrest of Charles Smith, 50, who was wanted on drug charges, the U.S. Marshals Service said, As the law enforcement officers entered the home, a man inside opened fire with a shotgun, hitting three marshals. The officers returned fire and hit Smith, who was dead on the scene, the Marshals Service said. The wounded marshals, whose names were not immediately released, were all taken to hospitals. One died of his injuries, while a second was hospitalized but is expected to recover, the Marshals Service said. A third marshal was treated and released from the hospital.

 Now this is justice. Good for you, lady. This guy messed with the wrong Marine! Liz Seccuro says forgiveness is one thing, justice another. So when the man who raped her when she was a college freshman at the University of Virginia wrote her a letter of apology nearly 20 years later, Seccuro heard him out. And then, she pressed charges. "Forgiveness is a journey you must take," Seccuro, 43, said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. But, she said, "that's different than our criminal justice system."

The business owner, wife and mother of two from Washington, D.C., has written a memoir about her decades-long struggle for justice and closure, and is speaking out today, calling for more support for rape victims. Seccuro praised CBS News foreign correspondent Lara Logan, who was brutally assaulted in Cairo while covering events in Egypt Feb. 11, for allowing her story to go public. Seccuro said victims of sexual assault can benefit when public figures talk openly about their experience. "Seemingly, talking about rape is the last taboo," she said. "So it makes it easier when people in the public eye share their story. [Women] can feel stigmatized for talking about their assault, but I think it's getting easier." Her own attacker, William Bebee, assaulted her at a party at the University of Virginia in 1984, and walked free for 19 years until he wrote Seccuro a letter in September 2005. "In October 1984 I harmed you," the letter read, according to an excerpt from Seccuro's memoir, "Crash Into Me," published in the January issue of Marie Claire magazine. "I can scarcely begin to understand the degree to which, in your eyes, my behavior has affected you in its wake."

Seccuro says she reported the rape to the college campus in 1984 but that the crime was never prosecuted. In Virginia, there's no statute of limitations on rape, so in 2005, after a series of awkward and stressful exchanges with her attacker, Seccuro says she finally decided to press charges. Bebee pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery in 2006 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison but received a suspended sentence of 18 months. He was paroled in August 2007 after serving six months in prison. Seccuro told AOL News she was satisfied with Bebee's sentence. Seccuro, who is now a victims' rights activist, said it took years to recover from the trauma of being raped. She has said that she struggled with eating disorders. "I did lose that innocence," she told NBC. "Also, I lost a dignity I think I should have had. But I've regained it back."

John Edwards would be good on "What's My Lie?"

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
John Edwards continues his fall from grace. This apparently selfish individual is about to put his children through another emotional mess only months after their mother died. Prosecutors may soon bring criminal charges against former presidential candidate John Edwards, who is being investigated about possible misuse of campaign donations to cover up his affair and love child with Rielle Hunter.

Edwards could be indicted by a federal grand jury in days or weeks, NBC News reported today, citing anonymous sources close to the investigation. The Justice Department is still reviewing the case, sources told the network, but could allow prosecutors to bring charges against Edwards. WRAL-TV said prosecutors will say whether they have decided to indict Edwards in late February or early March but did not cite a source. The Justice Department did not immediately return a call for comment today by AOL News. The case hinges on the testimony of two key witnesses, Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, a donor, and Andrew Young, who served as an aide to Edwards during his 2008 campaign and initially said he fathered Hunter's daughter. Paul Ryan, an attorney with the Campaign Legal Center and an expert on campaign finance law, said prosecutors will have to prove that Edwards knew the campaign donations were being used to hide his affair. "Did he knowingly violate campaign laws? That's the question," Ryan told AOL News in a phone
interview today. Fred Baron, Edwards' finance chairman, admitted before his death in 2008 that he helped hide a pregnant Hunter in California estates in 2007, but he said Edwards knew nothing about the campaign money being used to conceal the mistress. "John Edwards was not aware that assistance was provided to anyone involved in this matter," he said in August 2008.

“That’s three down. We move now to Arlene Francis.” On this day in 1950, Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen, humorist Hal Block, and Louis Untermeyer joined host John Daly as one of the classics of early television debuted on CBS. What’s My Line stayed on the air for 17 years, the longest-running game show in the history of prime-time network television and launched one of TV’s biggest production companies: that of Mark Goodson and Bill Todman.
During many years in the television industry, the Goodson-Todman name became famous for such hit game shows as I’ve Got a Secret, Beat the Clock, The Name’s the Same, To Tell the Truth, The Price is Right and The Match Game. What many people don’t know is that Mark Goodson and Bill Todman also produced a dramatic anthology, The Web, which aired on CBS-TV from July 1950 through September 1954 and then on NBC-TV (for four months) in 1957.
As the announcer for these shows would say, “This program is a Mark Goodson - Bill Todman Production.”
