Even Tiger has a debt crisis.

JULY 16, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
July 16 is … International Juggling Day

I might be busy today trying to do too many things at once.

One day closer to the world ending because of our debt crisis. You would think if our economic woes are that important to the world, a few countries would be stepping up offering a little help. China could forgive a month’s interest; Europe could not cash an aid check for sixty days; Africa could grow their own food and get their free guns somewhere else for a while.

The debt crisis will be dealt with. Our politicians never do anything until we are in a crisis, then the first thing they do is argue with each other, blame the other party and then come up with some miraculous deal that just pushes the crisis away from the next election; then it all starts over again. Instead of Obama spending a billion dollars on being reelected and the Republicans spending close to that amount, the money should be contributed to the general good. It would run the Chicago school system for a couple of years; it would pay for thousands of police officers; it would give every military person a nice bonus; it would build a few roads and put people to work doing it.

Some women you just don’t want to piss off. A Southern Californian woman is accused of cutting off the penis of her estranged husband. She was arrested late Thursday night after investigators responded to a 911 call and is now in custody at the Orange County Jail.

Catherine Kieu Becker of Garden Grove reportedly prepared dinner for her husband and put a poisonous substance or drug in his food to make him drowsy, reports KTLA. While the man was sleeping, Becker allegedly tied him to the bed. When he awakened, Becker cut his penis off with a knife and threw it into the garbage disposal, turning it on as she did so.

Lt. Jeff. Nightengale told NBC LA that Becker called 911 at around 10 p.m. requesting emergency assistance. Nightengale said that Becker "told responding officers that he 'deserved it.'" Nightengale also revealed that the married couple was going through a divorce. Nightengale spoke with the HuffPost and confirms that the victim has been upgraded to stable or good condition and is being treated at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. Nightengale also says that pieces of the severed member were recovered from the crime scene and transported to the hospital with the victim last night, but he has no details on how the surgery went. Police hope to interview the victim either today or tomorrow.

Becker has been charged with "aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, administering a drug with intent to commit a felony, poisoning and spousal abuse," according to the Associated Press. The most serious of these charges is "aggravated mayhem," which carries a life sentence with possibility of parole (as opposed to just "mayhem," which has a sentence of 3-5 years). Of the aggravated mayhem charge, Nightengale says, "It's so heinous -- we're looking at this as premeditated. Her intention was to permanently deprive him of a piece of his body and do it in such a way to inflict a great amount of pain and psychological damage." He also adds, "I've been doing this for 22 years and the only other time I remember this happening was when Lorena Bobbitt did it, and that didn't even happen here. This isn't a typical domestic violence case -- it was way over the top."

It is too bad that society has actually codified a law to cover this situation and this woman’s actions.

Looks like Tiger Woods cannot bailout the government from its debt crisis. He is supposedly having his only financial problems. I hope them broads were worth it, Tiger. When news broke a few weeks ago that Tiger Woods had signed an endorsement deal to hawk a heat rub in Japan, it was hard not to think of Lost in Translation, or of the Entourage episode when Vincent Chase goes to China to do an energy drink commercial because he's out of money.
Although Woods was likely paid in the single-digit millions for the spot -- in which he takes a swing, rubs his back, and says, "Go Vantelin!" -- it's a far cry from campaigns for PepsiCo, Gillette, and Accenture. The last time Woods showed up in Japanese TV ads was in 1997, when he promoted Asahi Wonda coffee, back before he became a phenomenon. So the deal with Kowa (maker of the rub) seems more like a moment of desperation than a return to form.
It's no secret that Woods, once king of the sports world, has suffered financially since his fall from grace. His endorsement list shrank and his marriage ended in a divorce settlement reportedly worth $100 million. But now he may actually be hurting for funds. At the very least, there are signs that he isn't generating enough to comfortably cover his costs.
Earlier this week, the golfer's agent, Mark Steinberg, announced he would be joining the agency Excel Sports. Although that means Excel gets Woods too, the icon was conspicuously absent from the announcement. Steinberg left IMG at the end of May. It took two weeks, but on June 7, Woods announced via Twitter that he would be leaving with Steinberg.
IMG declined to comment on the details of Steinberg's departure, or on Tiger Woods, but a trusted Fortune source with reliable information tells us that IMG was none too broken up about losing Woods, because his endorsement earnings have fallen so dramatically. The source says IMG's commissions for 2011 -- they'll continue to get a chunk of Tiger's endorsement deals through 2013 -- will be as low as $1.5 million.
That's a huge drop from two years ago. With giants like Gillette, Accenture, Tag Heuer, and Gatorade having jumped ship, Tiger's major deals are down to three: Nike, Electronic Arts, and Kowa. His EA Sports video game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour '12, set a first-week franchise record of 225,000 games sold. But our source also tells us that Tiger's Nike money fell by as much as 50% in 2010 (to about $10 million, down from $20 million in 2009) and that he will get the same reduced amount for 2011. The reason? Nike penalized him for his indiscretions, reducing his payment for two years as a response to his public behavior. Nike had no comment.
That Nike would have renegotiated Tiger's contract to give him a temporary pay cut may be hard to believe, but Bob Dorfman of Baker Street Advertising says, "That's not surprising. They're not going to release him entirely, because that's not the way they are, but [a pay reduction] would not surprise me at all."
As for the Kowa deal, Dorfman estimates its value at $4 million. Doug Shabelman of Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing believes it's worth around $3 million.
Recent valuations of Tiger's overall endorsement earnings for 2011 have been between $60 and $75 million. But based on our information about Nike, and on the Kowa estimates, the real number is likely closer to $20 million.
Woods' agent adamantly denies the assertion that the golfer is facing financial strain. "Tiger Woods is financially sound and strong, contrary to wide-ranging rumors and inaccurate figures in the media," Steinberg wrote in an email. "Stating anything else is incorrect and factually baseless."
The Woods P&L
Another factor that has undeniably fizzled is Tiger's tournament winnings. Woods won no majors in 2009, the first year that's happened since 2004. He went completely winless in 2010, and this year he's so far missed the U.S. Open, AT&T National, and British Open due to a knee injury. According to the PGA Tour website, Tiger's 2011 winnings so far total $571,363. Those are like pennies compared to the $10.9 million, $5.8 million, and $10.5 million he earned in 2007, 2008, and 2009, respectively. In 2010, that dropped to $1.3 million.
Woods is still young, and undoubtedly one of the greatest golfers alive, but as he continues to stay off the links, that money stream dries up. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods Dubai, a billion-dollar project that was first set to open in 2009 with a golf course, pricey real estate, and restaurant, was scrapped in February.
As Tiger's revenues have declined, his expenses have only climbed. To begin with, there's the reported $100 million divorce settlement. And last August, Woods took out a $54.5 million mortgage on his home in Jupiter Island, Florida. According to the public document, Woods is required to pay off the mortgage in full by January of 2016, giving him a mere five and a half years to shed the debt. He's therefore paying more than $10 million each year, including his $431,042 in annual property taxes.
That 2010 property tax information comes from the district offices of Martin County, FL, where the home Woods now occupies alone is located. The property, which Woods purchased in 2006 for $44.5 million, is valued at around $47 million (the county values the house at $26.48 million, the land at $20.5 million). His 2010 improvements to the dwelling and the property cost him $6 million, including three separate residential pools, a tennis court, a golf green with a few holes, an elevator, and a 14,736-square foot improvement to the interior of the house -- evidence that Woods is not used to living cheaply. But the pace of his home improvements has slowed, according to online records of the county appraiser's office. So far there have been none in 2011.
Mark Steinberg says simply that there is no debt on Woods' Jupiter Island home, and declined to elaborate. But the Martin County clerk's office confirmed that their records show that the mortgage has not been paid off.
The Jupiter Island mega-mansion isn't the only Woods property. Among others, in 2007 he bought his mother property near his own, in Jupiter Island, for $2.4 million. In 2010, construction on that cost him another $2.6 million. Presumably, it's Woods himself that pays and will continue to pay all taxes on the home.
Between the divorce settlement and his recent mortgage, Tiger has faced recent debts to the tune of at least $160 million, though it's unknown how much of this he has now paid down. His endorsement earnings will not come close to this in 2011, and he's no longer adding much to his pot with golf winnings. Nike's decisive slash to his contract has not helped matters.
"Tiger remains one of the most popular and visible athletes in the world, demonstrated by television ratings, tournament attendance and various empirical polls," Steinberg says. "His endorsement future is strong and any additional partnerships will be announced at the appropriate time."
To fix up his financial short game, Tiger Woods is going to have to start making money again the old-fashioned way: by playing the sport he's known for but that boat may have sailed without him.

The fall from grace is faster, harder and more costly for the over-achieving ego-maniacs, it seems. Tiger did not invent this slide from favorite son but he is perfecting some aspects of it.
Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

Anyone for Yahtzee?

JULY 15, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
July 15 is … National Tapioca Pudding Day and Respect Canada Day

Kiss a Canuck today while having some pudding.

Some days you just don’t feel like playing Yahtzee in Alberta, Minnesota, especially on Christmas.

What the hell is wrong with us. Weldon Marc Gilbert, a Washington man who is on trial for raping young boys and for producing child pornography, will be allowed in jail to watch as much of that child pornography as he'd like, according to local television station.

KOMO 4’s Keith Eldridge reports that the Washington State Supreme Court has ruled that defense lawyers have the opportunity to review all evidence facing their client, and because the 50-year-old is acting as his own attorney, he'll be able to review all of that material. "In my 16 years as a prosecutor, this is one of the most absurd and maddening results I've ever heard of, and this is the first time I'm aware of this happening in Pierce County," Mark Lundquist, a prosecutor in Pierce County, told ABCNews.com. "We don't have to turn over the guns used as evidence for a defendant ... and it's absurd that we have to turn over the child porn as evidence."

In Gilbert's case, the evidence includes over 28 hours of pornography on over 100 videos. Some of the video features him spanking and caning his young victims to the point of blistering, according to The Seattle Times. The Seattle Times also reports that Gilbert, who was a pilot for UPS, attracted young boys with rides in his airplane, travel, alcohol and flying lessons.

He was first arrested in Atlanta in 2007. Why should we care about this pukehead’s rights? Let him loose in prison, he will get justice the old fashioned and proper way.
It looks to me like the Feds are trying to get out of this drain on public funds after wasting a bunch of money and time on going after Barry Bonds with little success. The judge declared a mistrial Thursday in baseball star Roger Clemens' perjury trial after prosecutors showed jurors evidence the judge had ruled out of bounds.
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said the prosecutors had made a grave mistake. And he said Clemens could not be assured a fair trial after jurors were shown evidence against the court's orders in the second day of testimony.
Walton scheduled a Sept. 2 hearing to determine whether to hold a new trial. He told jurors he was sorry to have wasted their time and spent so much taxpayer money, only to call off the case.
"There are rules that we play by and those rules are designed to make sure both sides receive a fair trial," Walton told the jury, saying such ground rules are critically important when a person's liberty is at stake.
"If this man got convicted, he would go to jail," Walton said.
He said that because prosecutors broke his rules, "the ability with Mr. Clemens with this jury to get a fair trial with this jury would be very difficult if not impossible."
Prosecutors suggested the problem could be fixed with an instruction to the jury to disregard the evidence, but Walton seemed skeptical. He said he could never know what impact the evidence would have during the jury's deliberations "when we've got a man's liberty at interest."
"I don't see how I un-ring the bell," he said.
Defense attorney Rusty Hardin patted an unsmiling Clemens on the back as the judge announced his decision. Clemens did not speak to reporters as he left the courtroom and made a telephone call in a private corner of the hallway.
Clemens and his lawyers remain under a court gag order and they declined to comment as they left the courthouse. Clemens hugged a couple of court workers, shook hands with the security guards and signed autographs and a couple of baseballs for fans
"I'm not going to say anything," Clemens said, sounding frustrated at the mass of reporters and camera crews. He and his legal team ducked into a nearby restaurant to escape the horde of news people.
Walton interrupted the prosecution's playing of a video from Clemens' 2008 testimony before Congress and had the jury removed from the courtroom. Clemens is accused of lying during that testimony when he said he never used performance-enhancing drugs during his 24-season career in the Major Leagues.
One of the chief pieces of evidence against Clemens is testimony from his former teammate and close friend, Andy Pettitte, who says Clemens told him in 1999 or 2000 that he used human growth hormone. Clemens has said that Pettitte misheard him. Pettitte also also says he told his wife, Laura, about the conversation the same day it happened.
Prosecutors had wanted to call Laura Pettitte as a witness to back up her husband's account, but Walton had said he wasn't inclined to have her testify since she didn't speak directly to Clemens.
Walton was angered that in the video prosecutors showed the jury, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., referred to Pettitte's conversation with his wife.
"I think that a first-year law student would know that you can't bolster the credibility of one witness with clearly inadmissible evidence," Walton said.
He said it was the second time that prosecutors had gone against his orders — the other being an incident that happened during opening arguments Wednesday when assistant U.S. attorney Steven Durham said that Pettite and two other of Clemens' New York teammates, Chuck Knoblauch and Mike Stanton, had used human growth hormone.
Walton said in pre-trial hearings that such testimony could lead jurors to consider Clemens guilty by association. Clemens' defense attorney objected when Durham made the statement and Walton told jurors to disregard Durham's comments about other players.
There was no objection from Clemens' team during the Laura Pettitte reference, but the judge stopped the proceedings, called attorneys up to the bench and spoke to them privately for several minutes. Hardin pointed out during that time, the video remained frozen on the screen in front of jurors with a transcript of what was being said on the bottom.
Cummings had been quoting from Laura Pettitte's affidavit to the committee. "I, Laura Pettitte, do depose and state, in 1999 or 2000, Andy told me had a conversation with Roger Clemens in which Roger admitted to him using human growth hormones," the text on the screen read.
The judge eventually told the jurors to leave while he discussed the issue with attorneys in open court.
"Government counsel should have been more cautious," Walton said, raising his voice and noting that the case has already cost a lot of taxpayer money. He then left the courtroom and said he would go consult with a colleague on what to do.
This was intentional conduct or incompetent lawyers. Either way, the Government has a way out it should take. Clemens has been ruined. He will never get into the Hall of Fame. Congress should never put on the dog-n-pony show Rep. Waxman conducted. His committee all but forced people to lie before Congress if they wanted to have a job. If lying before Congress is such a big deal, why isn’t former Rep. Weiner on trial or an unlimited supply of lying politicians, including our President that lie or have lied to or before Congress?

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

Performers being good.

JULY 14, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
July 14 is … National Nude Day

I hope I don’t run into Glenn today, but he probably won’t be too far from a Playboy magazine. Luckily we do not have many nude beaches around where I live. I am not afraid or ashamed to say you do not want to see me in the nude. I do not want to see me in the nude. I do not want to see many people I know, if any, in the nude. Clothes are a good thing. I would rather let my imagination show me a nude friend than have reality rear its ugly head and show me.

I do not think that gravity is a law, more like a guideline, but it does exist and exert its power on everything including the human body.
That damn rock-n-roll did some good. Today is the anniversary of Live-Aid. The year was 1985. The event was the Live Aid concert for African famine relief. The place was Philadelphia, PA and it was also, London, England. Electrifying performances from Philly’s JFK Stadium, London’s Wembley Stadium and other venues were telecast world-wide.
The all-day and much-of-the-night concert featured some of the biggest names in rock music including Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Madonna, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. The audience was equally as big - 162,000 attended the concert and another 1.5 billion viewed it on TV.
Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof organized the Live Aid concert, gathering the big name stars, all of whom performed without pay.
Live Aid ran for some sixteen hours and raised over $100 million. Willie Nelson followed Live Aid with his version for American farmers called Farm-Aid.
Farm Aid started as a benefit concert on September 22, 1985, in Champaign, IL, held to raise money for family farmers in the United States. It was about time we worried about our own before we worried about the world. The concert was organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, spurred on by Bob Dylan’s comments at Live Aid earlier in that year that he hoped some of the money would help American farmers in danger of losing their farms through mortgage debt.

The first concert was at University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in Champaign on September 25 before a crowd of 80,000 people. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Roy Orbison, among others, and raised over $9 million for America's family farmers.

Nelson and Mellencamp then brought family farmers before Congress to testify about the state of family farming in America. Congress subsequently passed the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 to help save family farms from foreclosure. Today, Farm Aid is an organization that works to increase awareness of the importance of family farms, and puts on an annual concert of country, blues and rock music with a variety of stars. The board of directors includes Nelson, Mellencamp, Young, and Dave Matthews. Young's speeches about the environment are a highlight of the annual shows.

After the initial concert, the organization established emergency hot lines for farmers and farm associations. Farm Aid holds a farm disaster fund for farmers who lost their belongings and crops through natural disasters, such as the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the 2011 tornadoes. The funds raised are used to pay the farmer's expenses and provide food, legal and financial help, and psychological assistance.

The 2005 concert, marking the 20th anniversary of Farm Aid, took place at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Illinois, with events in downtown Chicago as well. The 2007 Concert took place at Randall's Island in New York City (1st Farm Aid in New York) and was recorded in High Definition to be broadcast on HDNet as a 2 Hour Special highlighting many of the performances from the Allman Brothers and Counting Crows to John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson.

Way to go boys. Hail, hail Rock-n-Roll.

Today is Harrison Ford’s birthday. He was born in 1942. Also on July 13th over the years:

In 1832 Source of Mississippi River discovered (Henry R Schoolcraft)
In 1836 US patent #1 (after 9,957 unnumbered patents), for locomotive wheels.

47% of people pay no federal income tax.

JULY 13, 2011

July 13 is … Fool's Paradise Day

This is a day for the illegal aliens and the rest of us are the fools.

I will be gone tomorrow so I am posting this early. Enjoy.

As they argue, harangue, bitch and blame each other while they try to appear to be doing something in Washington DC about the debt ceiling and the budget, the Democrats want more money from those that have money. I have never heard a Democrat mention that 47% of the people in the United States pay zero Federal Income Tax, nothing, nada. The wealthy are already paying for nearly one-half of the people in this country. Where is the much ballyhooed ‘shared sacrifice’ in that fact?

Taking away the incentive to being successful does not promote hard work and ingenuity. Why should a young or older business person work hard, scrape by and sacrifice to make a go of it, trying to improve his lot in life and that of his family if once he makes it and becomes successful a bunch of lazy deadbeat welfare sucking system workers get to share in his success all at the insistence of politicians he does not know and who themselves are living off the government dole?

Don’t tell me to sacrifice more and give more to the government so it can redistribute my wealth. The politicians were driving this country when it wrecked, I’m not gonna pay em for that. The time of buying your votes with my money are over.

Drew Peterson and his apparently in over his head attorney are happy about the Casey Anthony verdict. It is one thing to be happy about it and for the jury system, it is another to gloat about it. The lawyer representing former Illinois police officer and tabloid headline-grabber Drew Peterson said he and his client were happy to hear the not guilty verdicts in the Casey Anthony murder trial. "He said it is good to see a jury not act emotionally," Peterson’s attorney Joel Brodsky told The Huffington Post.

Anthony, 25, was acquitted on Tuesday of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Had she been convicted, she faced the possibility of a death sentence.

"My response is the same," Brodsky added. "The jury’s job is not to act emotionally. A jury's job is to evaluate whether or not the government has sufficient evidence, and it looks like in the Casey Anthony case they felt the government did not have sufficient evidence to prove their case."

Drew Peterson, 56, was arrested in May 2009 after a special grand jury found sufficient evidence to charge him in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Police have also named him an "official suspect" in the October 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson. The former Bolingbrook police officer is being held on $20 million bail, pending the start of his murder trial.

"In the Casey Anthony case, they had a pathologist say there was a homicide, an odor from the trunk, chloroform, fibers, the internet search for chloroform, the duct tape [and] a body disposed of in a swamp," Brodsky explained. "In Drew's case, they do not have one single piece of hard evidence, not one." I do not know what evidence the State has against Peterson but I would bet they have some evidence and are not moving on emotion only, although Will County, Illinois has a bad reputation and a stained history for prosecuting the wrong and innocent person.

Brodsky continued: "They have a pathologist that said it is a homicide [but] we have got three pathologists that say it is an accident. When it comes to hard evidence, they had some in Casey Anthony's case [but] in Drew Peterson's case they have zip." Sooner or later we will all see if they have ‘zip’.

Just a couple of thoughts I had.

July 12 is … National Pecan Pie Day

Do you say Peecon or Pican? I say Peecon myself, it just sounds more southern.

On July 12th in 1914 Babe Ruth makes his baseball debut, pitches for the Red Sox.

The Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas, which is reportedly run by a gay pedophile is taking on Betty Ford. What a bunch of inbreeding lunatics. The anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church has announced plans to picket this week's funeral services for former first lady Betty Ford in California and Michigan.

The website of the Topeka, Kansas-based church said the fringe group will demonstrate at Ford's funerals because she divorced her first husband William Warren prior to marrying the late president Gerald R. Ford. In Westboro's eyes, that makes Ford an adulterer who "loved to sit with tawdry reporters and blather about sex." In my eyes this makes all members of this church prime murder targets.

The group plans to picket at services at Saint Margaret Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, Calif. on Tuesday (July 12) and at Grace Episcopal Church in East Grand Rapids on Thursday when her casket will travel by motorcade for burial at the Ford Museum.
The extremist church -- mostly a collection of Fred Phelps' extended family and friends -- formally won the right to picket funerals in March after an 8-1 Supreme Court decision ruled it is protected by the First Amendment. "She couldn't wait to have an audience with a reporter to titter about premarital sex, and how much she loved to teach it to her daughters," the church's website said. "The trashy reporters encouraged her to say more! So she urged all the women of this doomed foul nation to engage in extramarital sex. Then she pushed for abortion, because when you teach a nation's women to be whores, it's inevitable pregnancies will inconvenience the selfish strumpets! That is the legacy of Betty Ford."
Therefore, all the woman members of this church are whores. That is what you get by applying their reasoning. Why don’t we all meet at this church and have an orgy, the head minister can demonstrate for us on both sexes of all ages.
