There is one born every minute and the minutes are getting shorter.

July 5 is … Workaholics Day

It takes a workaholic to properly train and deploy a SEAL dog. Read the story at this link if you want to be impressed by your government and its military. It is a tribute to the wonderful dog also.

Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey’s circus, the Greatest Show on Earth, was the brainchild of a man who said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” P. T. Barnum. That ie still true today and they are proving it by how much money the Nigerian government gives away. P. T. Barnum was born on this day in 1810 in Bethel, Connecticut.

His first ‘pull the wool over their eyes’ act happened in 1830, when he had people believing that an elderly black woman, Joice Heth, was George Washington’s childhood nurse. The gullible public supported him successfully for over three decades as owner of the P. T. Barnum’s Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome.

The museum housed several improbable attractions including the Fiji Mermaid (a fishtailed doll with a dried monkey head & torso). P.T. did have some legitimacy. He displayed Jumbo, the world’s largest elephant, and General Tom Thumb, the world’s smallest man, the first set of Siamese twins, and the famous soprano Jenny Lind. He even arranged a successful tour for her. Most of what Barnum had to offer would be considered the side show of today’s circus. But it was he who created the circus as we know it. Merging with Mr. Bailey and later, the Ringling Brothers in 1907, P.T. Barnum left us the lasting legacy of the circus extravaganza, housing true attractions along with the fake.

The most successful and outrageous showman of the times, Phineas Taylor Barnum was still a man of his word. After all, was there ever a greater show than the Greatest Show on Earth? Bring on the cotton candy, the clowns, the daring young man on the flying trapeze, and the parade of elephants. We’re ready to be suckered. I just won the Canadian Lottery and I didn’t even buy a ticket.

This case should get dismissed by the Court on its own Motion, sua sponte it is called in the legal world. When you commit a crime and are found guilty or plead guilty you lose some of your rights. This is one of them. I do not think the prison system wants a bunch of sexually aroused inmates looking for things to do. I don’t think all the Muslims in prisons or the born-again Christians want pornography available to their cellmate.

The Major League Baseball All Star game is July 12th. Buy my book of short stories. It has a novella about a terrorist attack at the All Star game. It will get you in the mood.

With the 4th of July firmly centered in our rearview mirror, we begin to realize summer is half over. Graduations are over: weddings are in full swing; youth baseball is winding down; the days are getting shorter; vacations have been taken; life is beginning to revert to normalcy after a brief detour at the commencement of each summer.

Soon, we will be celebrating Labor Day. Kids will be back in school; the older loved ones in our lives will be back at university; for many, the first job after graduation will begin enabling youth to determine for themselves if that decision in college was really the right one.

Life goes on. As I get older I think of things I never gave a second thought to just a few short years ago. Short is the key word in that line. As we age, years seem to go by quicker. People change and not always for the better. We can all get comfort in knowing “It is my life.”

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

Happy Fourth of July, long live and God bless America. The times we are living in make being an American harder than they once were. Personally, I am not always proud of our countries behavior but I am proud to be an American. The United States of America is not perfect but it beats second place exponentially. People from around the globe do not come to this country and plan ways of sneaking out, other than a few international criminals and terrorists. People do spend a lifetime longing forward to the day they can come to America.

America and Americans invented or perfected an unending list of products, ideas and rights that have been borrowed by most of the civilized world.

America gave the world;

Freedom of expression
Freedom of the press
Separation of church and state
Equal rights for all, although our country has had a problem fully embracing this ideal and still does
Baseball
Basketball
American football
Nuclear energy
Nuclear power
Thomas Edison
Elvis Presley
Frank Sinatra
Free and open elections
The Interstate Highway system concept, perhaps lifted from the Germans but perfected by Americans
Electricity
The light bulb
The forty hour work week
The assembly line
Plastics
Nylon
NASA
A man on the moon
Santa Claus as he is now depicted
Coke
Pepsi
The ice cream cone
Abe Lincoln
Dwight D. Eisenhower
The Executive, legislative and judicial branches of government
The Eagles
The 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team
Motion Pictures

The telephone
The telegraph
The Greatest Generation, those men and women who saved the world by fighting, dying and winning WW II as well as the generation before them that won WW I
The Far Side
The Godfather movies
Marlon Brando
Jack Nicholson
Robert De Nero
Katherine Hepburn
John Wayne
Rio Bravo
Dean Martin
Bing Crosby
The Wright Brothers
The airplane
Bill Gates
Windows
The cotton gin

The polio vaccine
Medical technology that has eradicated numerous diseases from the face of the earth
Cotton candy

Candy corn
The mousetrap
The tractor
Volleyball
Charcoal briquettes
The muffler
Thumbtack
Nickel-zinc battery
Teddy bear
Air conditioning
Tea-bag
Banana Split
Fly-swatter
Batting helmet
Fast food restaurant
Fortune cookie

This is a partial list and does not include many of the inventions or technological advancements we have made in the last 30 years. America is an impressive country. The world is better off because America exists than it would be otherwise. Many of the inventions and advancements would have been made by someone in another country but it would have been years later.

As most Americans and many democracy scholars know, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, two important and influential men who helped greatly in the shaping of our country and its form of government died on the same day. These men were. off and on, friends, political rivals, political allies, enemies, and friends again. They both died on July 4th, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson in Monticello, Virginia and Adams in Quincy Massachusetts. Neither man knew the other had died and it is only speculated now as to who died first. At the time, records of such things were not kept with great accuracy and were easily manipulated or changed to suit a person’s needs.

God bless America.

July 1 is … Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day and Build A Scarecrow Day

Blame the Civil War. It all started with the big bills the U.S. was running up fighting the Civil War. To help pay for the war, Congress established the Bureau of Internal Revenue on this day in 1862. President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill into law, making it possible for the feds to collect a three percent tax on incomes ranging from $600 to $10,000, and five percent on incomes over $10,000. Several precursors to the law were never officially enacted or enforced, and this law was just a temporary one...

The Bureau became the Internal Revenue Service in 1913. It was then that a 16th amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution permitting the Federal Government to once again collect a tax on income. Through a complicated system of rules, the Internal Revenue Service became the official collection agency and the reason why U.S. citizens all shudder and shake annually on April 15.

We have to pay for all the wars we start and welfare we handout to generations we have mutated by destroying their self respect and work ethic genes. We don’t really have to pay for them but we must tax in order to pay the interest on the loans we take out to start the wars and money we give to lazy welfare suckers.

Little Joe died on July 1, 1991. It has been 20 years?  Michael Landon actor (Bonanza), dies at 54 from cancer.
On this date in 1943 1st withholding tax from paychecks;
1963 Beatles record "She Loves You" & "I'll Get You";
1963 US postal service institutes the (Zone Improvement Plan) zip code;
1990 Despite Andy Hawkins no-hitting the White Sox, Yankees lose 4-0.

We reap what we sew. I have seen a few minutes of this guys show /reports in the past. I do not like the tactics and the ever present video camera. The show never shows the innocent folks they entrap and I am sure it has happened. They also edit the video for dramatic effect, leaving out what many may consider important pieces to the story.

Oh, the irony ... It's been reported that Chris Hansen, host of 'To Catch a Predator,' the controversial 'Dateline' show that uses hidden cameras to trap would-be perverts in sting operations, has been caught cheating on his wife ... in a sting operation using hidden cameras.

According to ‘The Daily Mail’ Hansen found himself on the receiving end of his own hidden camera tactics after the married NBC anchor was secretly filmed on an illicit date with a blonde television reporter 20 years his junior. He was the subject of a four-month long sting operation conducted by 'The National Enquirer' after he allegedly began an affair with former NBC intern Kristyn Caddell, a 30-year-old Florida journalist. The Connecticut-based Hansen has been spending more time in South Florida recently for work, reportedly investigating the disappearance of James "Jimmy T" Trindade for 'Dateline.'

Hansen has worked for NBC for two decades, but became famous with 'To Catch a Predator.' Launched in 2005, the show is devoted to the subject of identifying and detaining those who contact people they believe to be below the age of consent over the Internet for sexual liaisons.

The show's producers work with online watchdog Perverted-Justice, whose volunteers pose as underage girls offering sex on the Internet. But when the potential sexual predators arrive to meet the girls, they find themselves confronted by Hansen, his film crew and sometimes the police.

What he did does not appear to be criminal but much of what he videos and makes money and fame on is not against the law. It does compromise his credibility as a newsman; his honesty and fair dealings with the other woman, his wife and family are clearly in question. I hope he made enough money to afford a good divorce lawyer. I am sure his wife will hire a good one and ask that he pay her legal fees, a common practice in domestic relations cases.

Perhaps I and many others were too quick to condemn the former head of the IMF. Prosecutors have serious questions about the credibility of a hotel housekeeper who has accused former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn of raping her, and they are taking the extraordinary step of seeking a substantial reduction in his pricey bail, a person familiar with the case said Thursday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters not yet made public in court, told The Associated Press that prosecutors have raised issues about the accuser's credibility in the case against Strauss-Kahn, but would not elaborate on what those issues were. A separate law enforcement official who is familiar with the case, but not authorized to speak about it publicly, told the AP that the issue was not necessarily about the rape accusation itself, but about troubling questions surrounding the alleged victim's background that could damage her credibility on the witness stand. The official refused to elaborate.

The New York Police Department, which investigated the case, declined comment. The woman's lawyer did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Is this a case of ‘too quick to convict’ or is money talking?
Screw the little guy. Los Angeles Dodger’s payroll checks bounced for some employees this week. A number of team employees' paychecks bounced this week, days after team owner Frank McCourt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Los Angeles Times reported that players and full-time front office employees were ot affected..
Josh Rawitch, Dodgers vice president of communications, told the Los Angeles Times that the affected employees were part-time, game-day staff. The Times identified them as security guards and ushers who work at Dodger Stadium. The team issued new checks Wednesday and has agreed to cover bank fees, Rawitch told reporters.
