May 17 is … Pack Rat Day

I correctly predicted Donald “The Joke” Trump would not run for President. He confirmed my prediction on Monday. Now we can move onto the serious matters facing this country.

The head of the International Monetary Fund seems to be a piece of work. Dominique Strauss-Kahn's reputation with women earned him the nickname "the great seducer," and not even an affair with a subordinate could knock the International Monetary Fund leader off a political path pointed in the direction of the French presidency. All that changed with charges that he sexually assaulted a maid in his hotel room, a case that generated shock and revulsion, especially in his home country.

Police said the maid picked Strauss-Kahn out of a lineup. His lawyers should have stopped that until he was under arrest. Unless the charges are quickly dropped, they could destroy his chances in a presidential race that is just starting to heat up. Do you smell a payoff to the maid? This could end up being the most expensive head in history.

An arraignment expected Sunday night was postponed until Monday. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer William Taylor said testing for evidence delayed the arraignment. As is expected and required by the legal canon of ethics, yes lawyers have a canon of ethics, his lawyers are declaring his innocence of these outlandish charges. Lawyers have ethics we just do not always have morals. Their client’s reputation, however, preceded them.

The European politicians seem to live on Viagra; of course we have our share, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, JFK, just to name a few.

I have always enjoyed the Rat Pack and I’m not talking about failing to throw things away. Many readers may not remember and have only a vague inkling of who the Rat Pack is. Read on.

The Rat Pack was a group of actors originally centered on Humphrey Bogart. In the mid-1960s it was the name used by the press and the general public to refer to a later variation of the group, after Bogart's death, that called itself "the summit" or "the clan," featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, who appeared together on stage and in films in the early-1960s, including the movie Ocean's 11. Sinatra, Martin and Davis were regarded as the group's lead members.

The name "Rat Pack" was first used to refer to a group of friends in New York. Several explanations have been offered for the famous name over the years. According to one version, the group's original "Den Mother," Lauren Bacall, after seeing her husband (Bogart) and his friends return from a night in Las Vegas, said words to the effect of "You look like a goddamn rat pack." "Rat Pack" may also be a shortened version of "Holmby Hills Rat Pack," a reference to the home of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall which served as a regular hangout. Visiting members included Errol Flynn, Nat King Cole, Mickey Rooney and Cesar Romero. According to Stephen Bogart, the original members of the Holmby Hills Rat Pack were Sinatra (pack master), Judy Garland (first vice-president), Bacall (den mother), Sid Luft (cage master), Bogart (rat in charge of public relations), Swifty Lazar (recording secretary and treasurer), Nathaniel Benchley (historian), David Niven, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, George Cukor, Cary Grant, Rex Harrison, and Jimmy Van Heusen. In his autobiography The Moon's a Balloon, Niven confirms that the Rat Pack originally included him but not Sammy Davis Jr. or Dean Martin.

The 1960s version of the group included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and for a brief stint, Norman Fell. Marilyn Monroe, Angie Dickinson, Juliet Prowse, and Shirley MacLaine were often referred to as the "Rat Pack Mascots". Angie Dickinson was a fine looking woman. She appeared in Rio Bravo with John Wayne and Dean Martin in the 1950s western. The post-Bogart version of the group (Bogart died in 1957) was reportedly never called that name by any of its members — they called it the Summit or the Clan. "The Rat Pack" was a term used by journalists and outsiders, although it remains the lasting name for the group.

Often, when one of the members was scheduled to give a performance, the rest of the Pack would show up for an impromptu show, causing much excitement among audiences, resulting in return visits. They sold out almost all of their appearances, and people would come pouring into Las Vegas, sometimes sleeping in cars and hotel lobbies when they could not find rooms, just to be part of the Rat Pack entertainment experience. The marquees of the hotels at which they were performing as individuals would read, for example, "DEAN MARTIN - MAYBE FRANK - MAYBE SAMMY" as seen on a Sands Hotel sign.

Peter Lawford was a brother-in-law of President John F. Kennedy (dubbed "Brother-in-Lawford" by Sinatra), and the group played a role in campaigning for him and the Democrats, appearing at the July 11, 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Lawford had asked Sinatra if he would have Kennedy as a guest at his Palm Springs house in March 1963, and Sinatra went to great lengths (including the construction of a helipad) to accommodate the President. When Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy advised his brother to sever his ties to Sinatra because of the entertainer's association with Mafia figures such as Sam Giancana, the stay was cancelled. Kennedy instead chose to stay at rival Bing Crosby's estate, which further infuriated Sinatra. Lawford was blamed for this, and Sinatra "never again had a good word for (him)" from that point onwards. Lawford's role in the upcoming 4 for Texas was written out, and his part in Robin and the 7 Hoods was given to Bing Crosby.
On June 20, 1965, Sinatra, Martin, and Davis, with Johnny Carson as the emcee (subbing for Bishop, who was out with a bad back), performed their only televised concert together during the heyday of the Pack at the Kiel Opera House in St. Louis, a closed-circuit broadcast done as a fundraiser for Dismas House (the first halfway house for ex-convicts). Thirty years later Paul Brownstein tracked down a print of the "lost" show in a St. Louis closet. It has since been broadcast on Nick at Night (in 1998) as part of The Museum of Television & Radio Showcase series and released on DVD as part of the Ultimate Rat Pack Collection: Live & Swingin.

In 1981, Martin and Davis appeared together in the film Cannonball Run, and were joined by Sinatra in the sequel Cannonball Run II. This would be the last time that the three would appear in a movie together. (Shirley MacLaine also appears in the latter film).
In December 1987, at Chasen's restaurant in Los Angeles, Sinatra, Davis, and Martin announced a 29 date tour, called Together Again, sponsored by HBO and American Express. At the press conference to announce the tour, Martin joked about calling the tour off, and Sinatra rebuked a reporter for using the term "Rat Pack," referring to it as "that stupid phrase".
Dean Martin's son, Dean Paul Martin, had died in a plane crash in March 1987 on the San Gorgonio Mountain in California, the same mountain where Sinatra's mother, Dolly, had been killed in a plane crash ten years earlier. Martin had since become increasingly dependent on alcohol and prescription drugs. Davis had had hip replacement surgery two years previously, and been estranged from Sinatra because of his usage of cocaine. Davis was also experiencing severe financial difficulties, and was promised by Sinatra's people that he could earn between six and eight million dollars from the tour.
Martin had not made a film or recorded since 1983, and Sinatra felt that the tour would be good for Martin, telling Davis, "I think it would be great for Dean. Get him out. For that alone it would be worth doing" Sinatra and Davis still performed regularly, yet had not recorded for several years. Both Sinatra and Martin had made their last film appearances together, in 1984's Cannonball Run II, a film which also starred Davis. This marked the trio's first feature film appearance since 1964's Robin and the 7 Hoods. Martin expressed reservations about the tour, wondering whether they could draw as many people as they had in the past. After private rehearsals, at one of which Sinatra and Davis had complained about the lack of black musicians in the orchestra, the tour began at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on March 13, 1988.
To a sold-out crowd of 14,500, Davis opened the show, followed by Martin and then Sinatra; after an interval, the three performed a medley of songs. During the show, Martin threw a lighted cigarette at the audience; this, coupled with his increasingly blasé attitude to the tour and his frustration with Sinatra's anger over hotel accommodation in Chicago, led to his leaving the tour after only four performances. Martin cited 'kidney problems' as the reason for his departure. Eliot Weisman, Sinatra's representative, suggested replacing Martin with his client, Liza Minnelli. With Minnelli, the tour was called The Ultimate Event, and continued internationally to great success.

My wife and I were supposed to see the reunion tour of the Rat Pack in Chicago but I would not go see Liza Minnelli instead of Dean Martin, his replacement. I did see Frank Sinatra live twice and Dean Martin once. I never saw Sammy Davis , Jr. or Joey Bishop.

Davis's associate recalled Sinatra's people skimming the top of the revenues from the concerts, as well as stuffing envelopes full of cash into suitcases after the performances. Eliot Weisman had already been convicted of skimming, the act of taking money before it has been accounted for taxation purposes, after a series of Sinatra performances at the Westchester Premier Theatre in 1976, eventually being sentenced to six years in prison for the offence. August 1989, after Davis experienced throat pain, he was diagnosed with throat cancer; he would die of the disease in May 1990. Davis was buried with a gold watch that Sinatra had given him at the conclusion of The Ultimate Event Tour.
A 1989 performance of The Ultimate Event in Detroit was recorded and shown on Showtime the following year as a tribute to the recently deceased Davis. A review in The New York Times praised Davis's performance, describing him as "pure, ebullient, unapologetic show business."
Just a couple of thoughts I had.

Good bye to "The Joke" and let's laugh at bin Laden

May 16, 2011

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
May 16 is … Wear Purple For Peace Day

In what could be the best news of the day, NBC announced its fall lineup. Donald “The Joke” Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice is on it. That signifies “The Joke” must be under contract to do the show which would preclude a run for President. Thank you God, now if you could just get NBC to cancel Celebrity Apprentice.

What better day to bring a little cheer into the world with a few bin Laden jokes. I don’t think he wore purple or liked peace. Remember, this is for entertainment purpose and to see how the rest of us are taking this. The late-night comedians are having a field day with the death of Osama bin Laden. Here's a roundup of some of the best bin Laden jokes. I don’t stay up late enough to see these jokes live. Some are pretty darn funny.

"Osama bin Laden's death has been in the news all day. Leftish stations are going, 'President Obama saves the world.' Stations on the right are going, 'Obama kills fellow Muslim.'"
Craig Ferguson

"Apparently, members of Al Qaeda are online slamming the U.S. I don't understand why the terrorists are so mad about Osama bin Laden's death. Everybody in Al Qaeda just got a promotion."
Craig Ferguson

"Last night, the Dalai Lama implied that the killing of Osama bin Laden was justified. I think his exact quote was, "I love all living things, but that guy was a dick." Conan O'Brien

Osama Bin Laden's supporters want to rename the Arabian Sea where his body was dumped Martyr Sea. Really? Martyr Sea? Hiding in your bedroom for six years? How about Chicken of the Sea?" Jay Leno

"The death of Osama bin Laden has apparently damaged our relationship with al Qaeda. Al Qaeda says we're going to pay for Osama bin Laden's death. I'm pretty sure we did. We even took care of funeral arrangements. Maybe a thank you would be nice." Jimmy Kimmel

"The news of bin Laden's death interrupted this week's episode of 'Celebrity Apprentice.' Which begs the question, how do we kill bin Laden again next Sunday?" Conan O'Brien

"The Republicans are so happy about bin Laden they've granted President Obama full citizenship." David Letterman

"Osama bin Laden is in the ocean. How ironic. Once again surrounded by seals." Jay Leno

"Osama bin Laden had money and telephone numbers sewn into his clothes. Apparently we got him just as he was on his way to summer camp." Jay Leno

"After all the talk about caves, bin Laden was hiding in a million-dollar mansion in Pakistan. The CIA became suspicious when they learned there was a million-dollar mansion in Pakistan." Jimmy Kimmel

"Osama bin Laden's death has been in the news all day. Leftish stations are going, 'President Obama saves the world.' Stations on the right are going, 'Obama kills fellow Muslim.'" Craig Ferguson

"How about those Navy Seals. We're getting our money's worth there. They broke into Osama bin Laden's compound with 12-foot walls topped by barbed wire, and fired a warning shot into his head." David Letterman

"Elisabeth Hasselbeck of 'The View' is writing a children's book about Osama bin Laden's death. She wants to write a book to explain the whole thing to children. No title yet, but I have some suggestions: 'The Cat in the Fatwa,' 'Horton hears a Helicopter,' 'Goodnight, Douche'" Craig Ferguson

"Apparently, members of Al Qaeda are online slamming the U.S. I don't understand why they're so upset. Everyone in Al Qaeda just got a promotion." Craig Ferguson

"There's already been some trouble for Osama bin Laden in the afterlife. There was a mix up and he was greeted by 72 vegans." David Letterman

"The hot new drink around the country is the bin Laden. It's a Colt 45 and a shot that goes right to your head." Jay Leno

"Bin Laden was buried at sea. Or as Dick Cheney calls it, 'the ultimate waterboarding.” Jay Leno

"The White House says they will release the Osama bin Laden death photo. Better yet, they’re doing it on a set of limited edition commemorative plates." Conan O'Brien

"What?! Not only did we kill Bin Laden, we killed him in Abottabad! Abottabad sounds like name most New Yorkers would have invented for the fictional place they would have loved to kill Bin Laden." Jon Stewart

"He was living a half a mile from Pakistan's version of West Point in a town surrounded by retired ex-military officers. Let me put it in New York City terms. Bin Laden was on 21st and Seventh Avenue; they were on 21st and Ninth Avenue. If the Pakistani military academy were Domino's, they would have been delivered to bin Laden on foot." Jon Stewart

"Osama bin Laden, as we speak, is living with Spongebob in a pineapple under the sea." Jimmy Kimmel

"He's up to 2,000 friends on Shot In The Facebook." Jimmy Kimmel

"Osama bin Laden was killed by Navy Seals yesterday. They did DNA testing to make sure it was Bin Laden. Or as I call it, best episode of Maury Povich EVER." Jimmy Fallon

"President Obama gave the order for Navy SEALs to kill bin Laden. When President Bush heard about it, he was really upset, saying, 'I could have used seals?'" Conan O'Brien

“By the way, 'buried at sea'? means 'dumped in the ocean.' That’s what they did with him. They dumped him in the ocean. Now I won't feel so guilty about peeing in the water anymore when I go to the beach."? Jimmy Kimmel

"And so, Osama Bin Laden got his first bath in almost ten years. This could the best shark week ever." Jimmy Kimmel

"Finding bin Laden was like finding a needle in a country that swore it didn’t have needles." Stephen Colbert

"I think the next election just got a lot easier for President Obama 'cause his response to every question during the debates will be: 'Wait, I forget…Did you kill Osama Bin Laden? Or did I kill Osama Bin Laden. Oh no, it was me, wasn't it?'" Craig Ferguson

"President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden has been killed in Pakistan. That's right, bin Laden is dead — just like the Republicans' chances in 2012." Jimmy Fallon

"It looks like President Obama has a new campaign slogan: 'Yes I Did.'" Jay Leno

"Osama bin Laden was apparently shot twice in the face. It looks like Dick Cheney may have been involved." Jay Leno

"Osama bin Laden is dead, which means the No. 1 threat to America is now the KFC Double Down." Conan O'Brien

"Bin Laden was living in a house with no Internet access, which explains why there were all those bin Laden sightings at the Islamabad Kinko's." Conan O'Brien

"Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces. Everyone on TV has been really happy. Glenn Beck was crying — and then he found out about Osama." Craig Ferguson

"Looking for Bin Laden was like a 10-year game of Where’s Waldo. Only better because when you finally find Waldo you get to storm his compound and put a cap in his ass." Craig Ferguson

"President Obama must be very happy because he finally took down his arch enemy: Donald Trump. The bin Laden announcement interrupted 'Celebrity Apprentice.'" Craig Ferguson

"Bin Laden lived in this compound in Pakistan with all of his wives for 6 years. So he did suffer." David Letterman

"I would like us to kill bin Laden every Sunday night. It makes for a much brighter start to the week." Jimmy Kimmel

"Jacob and Isabella are the most popular baby names in the U.S. The least popular baby name: Donald Sheen bin Laden." Jimmy Fallon

"Oddly enough, bin Laden's last words were, 'I hope you at least use this to interrupt 'Celebrity Apprentice.'' Jimmy Fallon

$170 million just ain't what it use to be.

May 15, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

May 15 is … National Chocolate Chip Day

This should be a good day for all of us; at least for most of us.

Osama bin Laden apparently sat around his hideout watching news videos of himself and pornography. He was just laying around the house with the remote in one hand and himself in the other. Do you think the girls in the porn movies were Muslims in full traditional Muslim dress or beautiful, naked non-Muslim women? The type he wanted to kill. It was probably all done in research.

Perhaps Friday the 13th is not unlucky for everyone. CNN reported on Friday May 13, 2011 that the various parties working on Bernie Madoff’s mess are requesting payment. They all have received previous payments.  What does it cost to clean up after the biggest swindle ever? A lot.
The court-appointed lawyers working to recover money for victims of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme want a judge to approve a $43.7 million legal bill, for work done over a recent four-month period. That is $43.7 million in fees for a four month period. What work is being done on other clients’ files? The fee request is seeking payment for only six hours of time in Court during the four month period. That likely kept the bill down since lawyers usually charge higher rates for time in Court.

Court-appointed trustee Irving Picard and his firm, Baker & Hostetler, submitted the bill to a U.S. bankruptcy court judge, who will decide whether to approve it on June 1. The documents reveal that the firm's lawyers were paid at an average rate of $437.89 per hour, while paralegals and library staff were paid a rate of $250 per hour, as they scoured the earth to recover money and assets stolen by Madoff. If a paralegal or library staffer works a forty hour week and gets $250.00 per hour, this gives that worker a weekly salary of $10,000.00 or $520,000.00 annually. Even if the law firm puffs the hourly rate for support staff by 100%, that still amounts to an annual salary for these clerk type positions of $260,000.00, with the law firm making the same amount for overhead.

All told, 285 lawyers and 66 paralegals and staffers worked on the case. This is in addition to the $128 million that has already been paid to the firm. The fees are paid from money collected from Wall Street firms by the Securities Investor Protection Corp.

For his part, Picard put in for $714,000. He has so far been paid $3.2 million for his work on the Madoff case. But Picard was not the highest paid lawyer. That distinction goes to the firm's chief counsel David Sheehan, who has requested $893,000.  Documents filed by the firm say that Sheehan worked 1,075 hours during the four months that ended in January. His hourly rate: $830.45. That comes to an average of about nine hours a day, seven days a week -- Thanksgiving and New Year's included.

The documents provide some insight into the type of work the lawyers were doing. The lawyers spent 5,230 hours investigating hedge funds that fed funds to Madoff's scheme -- for which they were paid $2.6 million. They have requested another $1.7 million for the 4,266 hours they spent investigating the Madoff family. In December, Picard's firm sued Madoff family members and former employees of their tainted firm for $69 million, accusing them of benefiting from the Ponzi scheme. The lawyers are seeking more than $80,000 for the 146 hours they spent handling inquiries from the press. Court appearances, totaling a mere six hours during the four months, were worth $2,800 for the firm.

The judge is being asked to approve $1.1 million worth of expenses for Baker & Hostetler. The expenses run the gamut, from $74,000 for making copies to $248,000 in translation costs. The single biggest category was for out-of-town travel, worth $202,000. Business meals totaled nearly $54,000. Postage cost $1,500.

A spokeswoman for Baker & Hostetler intelligently declined to comment.

While the firm's bills might seem pricey, the pay scale at Baker & Hostetler is typical for New York lawyers, said David Paige, chief executive and founder of Sterling Analytics, which analyzes legal fees. "The rates do seem on the higher side, but not out of line for top firms," said Paige. Picard has spearheaded the recovery of about $10 billion worth of funds and assets that were lost in Madoff's massive fraud, which netted thousands of hapless investors. Another $10 billion in stolen money has yet to be recovered.0:00 / 3:29 Unraveling Madoff's web of lies  The largest source of recovered funds is the$7.2 billion settlement agreement with Barbara Picower, widow of Jeffry Picower, who the trustee considers to be Madoff's biggest beneficiary. Picower died of a heart attack in 2009. Of the 16,518 investors who have filed claims with Picard's firm, he has recognized 2,414 claims as being eligible for compensation. The legitimate claims total nearly $6.9 billion, according to the trustee. This includes the approximately $800 million that has already been paid to the victims by SIPC.

Meanwhile, Madoff languishes at a medium security federal prison in Butner, N.C., where he is serving a 150-year sentence. Madoff was arrested in December of 2008 and pleaded guilty three months later to running the largest pyramid-style scheme in history.

I knew I should have gone to work in New York City. I also worked Thanksgiving and New Year’s, just not in New York City. I don’t understand how you can justify $830.45 per hour plus costs. I know the cost of living in New York City is high but you are getting your meals paid for and you work so much, allegedly, that you do not have time to lounge around in a $10,000.00 per month apartment. All of your work related expenses are paid for. That is called overhead and should be paid for out of the $830.45 per hour. That is how businesses operate. Why should I pay you a profit and pay you for the cost of doing business; that’s double-dipping.

I know or have met well over one hundred lawyers just as intelligent and as capable as the lawyers at this New York firm. Anyone of them would do this work for $200.00per hour and an office with a staff of three. It can be determined from the bills the firm is seeking payment for that support staff do the leg work and heavy lifting. You need a focused supervisor who can read to manage the staff. You should be able get a lot of qualified candidates for this job since they have already been paid $128 million, are seeking another $43.7 million and are not done yet. Additionally, other lawyers, investigators, state agencies, support staff, etc. are seeking and are being paid from the Madoff case. How much money, on a per cent basis, will the investor who lost money to the crook ever get back? At this rate, not much will be left.
Just a couple of thoughts I had.
