I guess we had to start a third war, two wasn't enough.

March 20 is … Proposal Day and Festival of Extraterrestrial Abductions Day

What a weird ending to the Butler vs. Pittsburgh game last night. Too bad somebody had to lose.

It was on this day in 1852 that Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic book was published. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, subtitled Life Among the Lowly became an instant success, selling 300,000 copies in its first year. It has since been translated into twenty languages and performed as a play the world over. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was even spotlighted in the Broadway musical and film, The King and I. Maybe you remember the haunting chant from the show, “Run Eliza, Run!” Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel remains a must-read for school children and a reminder to all of us of an ugly time in the history of the United States.

The antislavery novel and the adapted plays all feature the elderly, kind slave, Uncle Tom; the slave child, Topsy; Little Eva, the daughter of Tom’s owner; Eliza, a young mulatto woman and the cruel, northern-born overseer who beat Tom to death, Simon LeGree.

The book brought much sympathy from around the world toward the American “peculiar institution” of slavery. In fact, Abraham Lincoln told Harriet Beecher Stowe she was “the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war,” referring of course, to the Civil War.

’Til this day, we refer to an employer or any other with slave-driving tendencies as a ‘Simon LeGree’.

My brother E-mailed this to me I cannot vouch for its accuracy but it sounds like something a politician would do. No matter what side of the aisle you're on, this is funny!

It just all depends on how you look at some things. Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Senator Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows  in Montana territory. On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.'

So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle. Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

"Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

Now that’s how it's done, Folks! That's real POLITICAL SPIN.

Now we will know if it has dirty pictures; You have heard of ".com" and ".org." Joining them soon will be their bawdy cousin: ".xxx."

On Friday, the board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the Internet's naming system, approved the creation of a red-light district online for pornographic websites. It follows a decade-long battle over such a name. The board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved the domain ".xxx" for pornographic websites. Religious groups argue that giving adult websites their own corner of the Internet legitimizes the content. Pornographers worry it will ghettoize their sites. Although it's meant to be voluntary, they fear governments could try to mandate the domain's use, so that pornographic content is more easily blocked. Diane Duke, executive director of the adult entertainment industry's Free Speech Coalition, said in a statement that ICANN has "disregarded overwhelming outpouring of opposition from the adult entertainment industry - the supposed sponsorship community" and dismissed the "interests of free speech on the Internet."

Supporters have maintained that approving the domain is in keeping with the principle of openness that has fueled the Internet's growth. While the idea of ".xxx" has provoked a philosophical debate, for the U.S. company that submitted the application for the domain, the issue is little more than a matter of dollars and cents. ICM Registry and its CEO, Stuart Lawley, who has led the fight for ICANN's approval of ".xxx," stand to profit handsomely from the rollout of ".xxx" websites because he will be in charge of collecting fees for the use of the new domains.

Lawley plans to charge registrars $60 per year for the domain names. He estimates that he could sell as many as 500,000 by the time he rolls them out this summer. "This was always going to be a very lucrative arrangement," he said in an interview Friday. Lawley's prices have been a critical issue for opponents to his plan, since domain names typically sell for a fraction of what Lawley plans to charge. They often sell for $10 or less. ICANN had repeatedly rejected Lawley's application since 2000, under pressure from Christian groups and governments unhappy with the spread of online porn. Lawley has pitched the suffix as a way for parents to more easily block access to the content. He argues it will be easier for Web filtering software to block ".xxx" sites since they are clearly labeled as porn.

It is always the money, no matter what spin or lies you tell, it’s always the money, which I got no problem with. The only thing wrong with it is that it is him and not me making the money.

The world is attacking Libya. It has been named Operation Odyssey Dawn. French war planes flew over Libya as Libyan forces ignored the cease fire and stormed the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. The United States, once again the main player in this insanity, is supplying the navy, the majority of the planes, personnel, bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles. The cruise missiles cost well over two million dollars a copy. We have deployed over 110 so far.  Just in cruise missiles, the United States spent over 228 million dollars in a two hour period on a Saturday afternoon half way around the world while our President was out of the country and the rest of us watched the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Life is timing.

The Tomahawks were fired by United States and British submarines and US naval destroyers. Someone has to explain to me why we are wasting that money to blow up a country and its infrastructure when we all know we will rebuild the damage done to Libya. Why don’t we tell Libya to go to hell, go ahead, kill each other. Call us when it is over. We will spend our money rebuilding our infrastructure, employing our people and upgrading our country.

This is not a world crisis. Genocide is not happening. The world and especially the US should mind its own business. A few weeks ago our Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, said we should have are head examined if we involved ourselves in another Muslim war. It is time to make the appointment so we can candle our collective leader’s heads. Our military should act like Shane, “come back, Shane, come back”

Police engaged in a roughly 20-minute standoff with a knife-wielding man on the floor of Los Angeles' Staples Center, where the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers are set to play later in the day. Police tackled and apprehended the man Saturday after facing off against him on the basketball court near the visitor's bench area. Some spectators for the 12:30 p.m. game had begun filing into the arena, but were evacuated once the standoff started. The players were confined to their locker rooms. Police spokeswoman Officer Norma Eisenman says the report of the man with a knife came in shortly after 11 a.m. from an off-duty officer. She had no further information. Apparently no one was hurt or really in danger.

The revenge of the squirrel and the Madigans.

March 19, 2011

March 19 is … Poultry Day. You want to buy a duck?

I know, I know, a duck is not poultry but then neither are swallows.

The Illini won impressively, beating former coach Lon Krueger and UNLV Friday night. Now they have to play number 1 seed Kansas and former coach Bill Self. Good luck Illinois, make us rail splitters proud.

This is St. Joseph’s Day, the day that those little birds known as swallows traditionally return to the Mission San Juan Capistrano in California. Every March 19th since 1776 (with very few exceptions), the birds come back to usher in spring in this Southern California seaside town. While their return is an annual tourist attraction, some in the community have gotten a bit fed up with the mess left behind when the birds migrate in the fall (October 23rd, St. John’s Day). It is costing the quaint town of San Juan Capistrano, in Orange County, California, a lot of money to clean up historic, old buildings where the swallows return to roost year after year.
St Joseph was the worldly father of Jesus, husband to the Virgin Mary. He was a carpenter, a well known and respected craftsman. Joseph worked on homes and in homes. Over the years, a tradition has developed that helps people sell real estate. This has caused St. Joseph to be called “The underground real estate agent” You can always count on us Catholics to come up with a way to sell religious artifacts.

The tradition calls for those wanting to sell their house bury a statue of St. Joseph in their yard. The particulars of the burying process are;

1. Bury the statue in your front yard, near the For Sale sign or near the road. Exact location can vary.

2. Bury the statue upside down, facing the house.

3. Pray to St. Joseph when you are burying him and keep praying to him until the house sells.

4. Have faith at all times in yourself, St Joseph and your house.

5. After the house sells, dig up the statue and put him in a place of honor in your new home.

Lisa Madigan and her father, Michael Madigan are covering up for a convicted felon and showing loyalty to a political ally over the people of the State of Illinois.

This was written by Lee Williams and first appeared on the web site www. illinoispolicy.org The web site for the Illinois Policy Institute. Much more can be be found there. Reporters are accustomed to being blasted by the people and organizations whose foibles they expose. It’s part of the job. It’s almost formulaic.  After publishing a scathing special report about an agency or its staff, the top official almost always accuses the journalist of “shoddy reporting.” Meanwhile, behind the scenes they’re scrambling to fix the problems exposed in the story. Government officials love to attack the messenger when they can’t handle the message, and who’s a better target than a reporter? Over the years, I’ve been lambasted by governors, corrupt officials and a host of top cops. It’s happened so often I could almost predict what the officials would say and how they’d communicate their message. On Wednesday, March 16, after we published a special report about a certain state rep’s bribery charge, I was introduced to Machine Madigan.

Lisa Madigan, our attorney general, was the first to act. Her office began pumping out e-mails to reporters containing snippets of state statutes, trying to debunk our conclusions and cast aspersions on the Institute. The statements were delivered “on background,” meaning the reporters weren’t supposed to disclose that the information came from the Attorney General’s Office. Some reporters rejected the off-the-record information. Others posted it on their blogs within minutes.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Madigan’s Office, Lisa’s father, started spinning like the proverbial top, and calling me and our CEO nearly every 15 minutes to demand a correction. They offered brief glimpses of “official documents” to reporters that they claimed shot holes in our story. We placed our documents online for everyone to see. They’re still there.

Most troublesome was the total reversal by one of the sources in the story—a staff attorney at the Illinois Board of Elections, who not only told me that convicted felons can’t serve in the House, he detailed several legal mechanisms with which they could be removed, and added that the state rep could also be charged with perjury. As a state employee, I can only imagine what was said to him when the story broke. I hope to find out, as I’ve sent a FOIA request for all the e-mail he received in the past two days. At least one journalist appears to have traded objectivity for access in this case and posted the Speaker’s story online without asking any critical questions, such as whether the good folks of the 28th House District are best represented by someone who tried to bribe his way out of a DUI arrest, why the Speaker has pumped more than $60,000 into the representative’s campaigns, or whether convicted criminals should serve in the People’s House.

We will continue to face down the machine and seek transparency in this issue. We will continue to expose corruption within all levels of government—especially the legislature—undaunted by machine politics or the possibility we might make a lawmaker mad.  Why, you ask? Everyone at the Institute truly believes we can make Illinois a better place. This permeates everything we do.  The watchdog mentality among our staff has grown even stronger as a result of this latest investigative report. We are dedicated to creating good policy, and we all have the strong desire to expose bad practices and bad actors when we see them. Stay tuned for more updates on this latest investigative report. As always, if you have a story to tell, call our anonymous Tip Line 1-888-666-8809.

1928 - Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll left WGN radio in Chicago to head across town to WMAQ radio. They weren’t able to take their previously popular radio show names with them due to contract limitations. So Sam and Henry was no more. However, Gosden and Correll came up with a new name for the show that became even more popular than the first. A year later it was the national hit: Amos and Andy.
1977 - The staff of WJM-TV had a going-away party, as the last episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show was broadcast. Everyone was fired except the inept Ted Baxter. The show had been a popular hit for seven years. Syndication continues to keep Mary, Lou, Murray, Ted, Rhoda and the rest of the crew going with what was called “the best television of the 1970s.”  Rhoda had already married, right Glenn?

Tree rats finally revolt; In Bennington, VT, a gray squirrel has been terrorizing locals with his own brand of march madness. Perhaps harboring a vendetta against humans or possibly mad from rabies, the squirrel has attacked at least three separate people. The attacks have been described as an unprovoked flurry of scratching and biting. The "Beast of Benington" attacked one resident, Kevin McDonald, while he was innocently shoveling snow in his front yard. According to a local paper, the Bennington Banner, the squirrel jumped McDonald from behind, scratching at his back until being thrown off. The persistent squirrel came back for two rounds before McDonald retreated to his home and the squirrel disappeared into a nearby tree. The next day, he saw his neighbor battling the same rodent with a metal pole and a blanket. The local Game Warden has visited with several of the squirrel assault victims and reported that a woman that was bitten on the back of her neck will undergo a series of rabies vaccinations.

If your travels take you to Bennington, beware this hostile creature. Rumors have popped up that a band of renegade squirrels, led by the notorious Rocky and Bullwinkle are organizing a same sex marriage for squirrels march for next weekend. I will keep you posted.

Fridays are for fun stuff.

March 18 is … Supreme Sacrifice Day

It’s Friday. Enough of the world news and the obvious message therein that we are going to hell in a hand basket. Let’s just read and have a little fun. Not a lot serious today. Long live Caligula and alarm clock sales.

The Beatles went gold this day in 1967 receiving a gold record for the hit single, Penny Lane. This was not an unusual event for The Beatles. However, the recording of Penny Lane has left us with some interesting trivia. According to Paul McCartney, Penny Lane is a bus roundabout in Liverpool; and there is a barber’s shop showing photographs of every head he’s had the pleasure to know;  no that’s not true, they’re just photos of hairstyles, but all the people who come and go stop and say hello. “It’s part fact, part nostalgia for a place which is a great place, blue suburban skies as we remember it, and it’s still there.” There were at least two different endings to the song. Radio stations were furnished with a 45 rpm version that featured a trumpet solo of seven notes, sustaining on the final note into Ringo’s cymbal conclusion. Record buyers, on the other hand, heard the words “Penny Lane” at the end of the song, which then went into a sustaining note under Ringo’s cymbal. There was no trumpet fanfare. The original version shows up on the Rarities album on Capitol Records. Those having the original ‘Promotional Copy’ of the song have quite a valuable find. Penny Lane is also included on the American release of the Magical Mystery Tour album, but not the British EP version. While a number one song in America, Penny Lane made it to number two in England, causing some to wonder “if The Beatles were beginning to slip,” according to The Beatles -- An Illustrated Record. The ‘B’ side of gold record was the popular Strawberry Fields Forever.

So Hillary Clinton told Wolfe Blitzer she does not want to serve in the cabinet in a second Obama Presidential term. She went on to say she did not want to be President or Vice-President. Hillary, I got some news for you. You apparently are a slow learner if the last election didn’t clue you in that we don’t want you as our President or Vice-President. This isn’t your choice, it is ours. Go on the book tours with Bill and make your millions, above-board or with inside information, we do not care, just go.

Just for Hillary. Even a hawk is an eagle among crows

Gilbert Gottfried just got fried by Aflac. They don’t have to pay this quack any more.

On this date in 1995, a sports agent FAXED a document to many news and sports organizations that read simply; “I’m back.”. In 1995 Michael Jordan announces he is ending his 17 month NBA retirement. More information than line above. I still think Michael Jordan was forced to retire by basketball or get suspended for his gambling. This was not long after his father was murdered. The “retirement” saved face for both Michael Jordan and the NBA. Just a theory I have.

Happy St Patrick's Day! May the luck of the Irish be with you.

March 17, 2011
BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND
The news as I see it and the views as I want them.
March 17 is … Submarine Day. Is it a yellow day?

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! “Top of the mornin’ to ya’” “And the balance of the day to you.”

Lester Holt and his crew have been exposed to radiation while covering the stories in Japan. Duh! What do you think Les, the laws of science and physics don’t apply to American news journalists. Before you try it Lester, I will clue you in. If you jump in front of a bullet, you will be shot. No charge for the heads up. Just doing my part for the news media.

I occasionally will revisit subjects previously written about. I try to stay fresh, current and informative. It appears my earlier observation concerning the information being released by the Japanese government was accurate. The Pentagon is now voicing concerns that the Japanese authorities are holding back critical information, trying to downplay this catastrophe. The Japanese authorities still have a mind-set the Emperor can do no wrong. Everyone else apologizes profusely, almost as much as President Obama but the government has a problem admitting fault.

A few days ago, I wrote about Lisa Madigan and her crusade against gun owners and gun ownership. A new twist has developed I that story but no Illinois official will ever admit to any linkage. As reported in The Huffington Post and other news sites, a change in state police policy could create problems for Amish gun-owners in Illinois, as a rule requiring photos to be on gun-owner ID cards will soon be applied to their community. As the log Amish America, who knew that existed, wrote Monday, many Amish people use guns to hunt deer and other game, and to disperse "varmints." The Amish are also known for being uncomfortable with photography, especially posed photography, which they believe leads to idolatrous vanity, according to AmishNews.com. So, now-departed Illinois State Police director Jonathan Monken's decision requiring the Amish to have a photo on their new Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) cards could put Amish hunters in a bind. "A lot of the Amish hunt and they usually use squirrel or rabbit rifles to bring some food back home," Douglas County Sheriff Charles McGrew told the Mattoon Journal-Gazette. Douglas County is the center of Illinois's Amish population. "Their big concern is this means they won't be able to purchase guns or ammo."

Leaders of the community met with their state legislators to work on negotiating a compromise that would allow Amish people to receive non-photo IDs. Pennsylvania and Ohio, the two states with the largest Amish populations in the country, both allow for such an exception on state documents when religious beliefs forbid a person from having his or her photo taken. One source of frustration among the Amish community and its lawmakers: Monken handed down the decision about the FOID cards on his last day as director of the State Police. "It was unfair for him to do this on the same day he was leaving," state Rep. Chapin Rose, a Republican from Mahomet, Illinois said. I agree. It would seem Lisa Madigan got word to this coward, Jonathon Monken, to issue this order which reverses long–standing policy. It was obvious this decision would lead to a policy fight and chicken-boy Monken is not around to defend his decision. He probably took his Illinois pension and went to Arizona.

This is likely an issue of religious beliefs and practices. The recent past has seen Muslim women try to have their State ID or driver’s license picture taken in their traditional full face Niqab. The Courts have said no. The idea behind the picture is identification. If one cannot see the face of the person on the idea, the purpose of the identification is defeated. If this goes to Court, the Amish will likely lose this fight. It is not a legal defense or winning argument to say we just like the peace loving Amish more than the Muslims so they should get a pass. That is what should be done but it more than likely won’t be done.

I did not know the Amish used computers or had web sites but I never looked for them either. The Amish also blog but we are not going for the same audience. Our demographics are different.

The federal government now has Agency heads, unelected bureaucrats, making decisions on capital punishment. This has to stop immediately. The states have rights. The federal government should provide a defense to international borders, not get involved in every aspect of citizens daily life or the business of the states. All Georgia executions are off after federal drug agents seized the state's supply of a sedative used in lethal injections that has been challenged by capital punishment critics and death-row inmates, including a man recently executed who called the British exporter of the drug a "fly-by-night supplier." Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Chuvalo Truesdell wouldn't say exactly why Georgia's supply of sodium thiopental was taken Tuesday, just that "we had questions about how the drug was imported to the U.S." The sedative is part of a three-drug cocktail used in executions that has been in short supply since the sole U.S. manufacturer stopped making it. No more execution dates in Georgia have been scheduled and it's unlikely any will be set before the issue is resolved. Georgia Attorney General's Office spokeswoman Lauren Kane said prosecutors couldn't ask a judge to set executions if corrections officials didn't have the necessary supplies to carry one out. Georgia's stockpile of the drug has been a target of death row inmates and capital punishment critics since corrections officials released documents this year showing the state obtained the drug from Link Pharmaceuticals, a firm purchased five years ago by Archimedes Pharma Limited. Both are British firms. The drug was used in January to execute Emmanuel Hammond, a 45-year-old man convicted for the 1988 shotgun slaying of an Atlanta preschool teacher. His attorneys sought a delay to gather more information on how the state obtained the drug, claiming in court documents it came from a "fly-by-night supplier operating from the back of a driving school in England." They said the drug could have been counterfeit. The U.S. Supreme Court, as well as lower courts, rejected Hammond's argument.

The state's stockpile came under more scrutiny in February when John Bentivoglio, a former deputy attorney general, asked the Justice Department to launch an investigation into whether state corrections officials violated federal law by not registering with the DEA when it imported its supply of sodium thiopental.

"The United States has strict drug import rules for a reason: To ensure drugs used for legitimate purposes are not adulterated, counterfeit, or diverted into the illicit market," said Bentivoglio, who is representing death row inmate Andrew Grant DeYoung. These drugs are imported to execute a convicted killer. Who cares if they are not real pure if they work. If they don’t, let’s just shoot the killer.

Joan Heath, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections, said state officials were not concerned with the quality of the drug and just wanted to make sure they were complying with the law.
